We've got windows 7 pro x64 which we got through windows volume licensing center (as a non-profit).

I've been getting the "windows not genuine" pop-up. I've spoken to microsoft about it 3 times. They weren't able to fix it. The last rep told me to go online to a site and a rep from there would call me back. The url didn't have anything like that.

Hopefully someone here will be able to resolve it.

I've tried a few online suggestions but I'm unable to even create a restore point in order to begin. I get the error:

"The restore point could not be created for the following reason:

An error was dectected in the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS). The problem occurred  while trying to contact VSS writers. Verify that the event system service and the VSS service are running and check for associated errors in hte event logs. (0x80042318)"

When I run slmgr/rearm I get:

"script: slmgr.vbs

line: 22

char: 1

error: library not registered

code: 8002801D

source: (null)

Help appreciated.

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

Go to Piriform's website, and download the free version on the left.  Click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version. You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.

After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.

Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course):

post-33068-0-86653600-1480692866_thumb.j

Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot.

Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard

Now, once you are back in the forum topic you are posting in, click the ADD REPLY or REPLY TO THIS TOPIC button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Add Reply below the Reply box.

The malware check may be needed as Louis suggested.

But a few times over the years I have noticed a little quirk with this error.

I have seen the message go away after going to control panel and then to SYSTEM.

This forces a quick activation check and as long as you have a legit copy seems to somehow reset the error.

YMMV Good luck.

I think I may have located the problem. I tried repairing windows from the installation disk. It said it found another version of windows and said there were startup problems. I had tried out windows 8.1 in the past and decided I liked windows 7 better. For some reason the 8.1 version is still there and now, when I boot, it gives me a choice of 8.1 or 7.

So far the "not genuine" message hasn't appeared (been up for 15 minutes so far).

It's back. It was actually gone for several hours yesterday and didn't come back until I rebooted today.  I'm wondering if it has to do with the 8.1 version because it's not genuine and was just being used as a trial. Is there a way to uninstall it? I was thinking of running the "repair windows" again and possibly reinstalling windows 7 as an upgrade.

I reformatted the windows 8 partition and then used bcdedit to remove the boot option. Hopefully that's it.

Well this is kind of strange. I talked to the windows volume licensing people and they told me that our windows key is for windows 7 enterprise and not for windows 7 pro and that the installation id didn't match the product key. They told me to download windows 7 enterprise and then do a clean install and the product key would work. Then I remembered that I could get the product key from their volume licensing website. So I went to get the key for the windows 7 pro upgrade --- and it was the same key as we have.

Anyway - I decided to try to activate online (since I had installed windows 7 pro x64 on top on the old installation by clicking "upgrade" to try to fix the problem). I typed "slui 4" at the dos prompt and then clicked to activate online. It asked for the product key and I gave the old key and --- it activated.

Problem is that the old installation said that it was activated and genuine but it still brought up the "not genuine" window. At least I think I found where the problem is if it happens again.

Ok so in the end sounds like a licensing issue. Hopeful Microsoft got you sorted out now.

Yes, I have seen this many times where a "tech" will nuke a computer and then put a illegal copy of Windows back on. I would ask for my money back as this is not a real repair.
