Tried to restore windows vista to earlier date, was stuck for 18 hours than power failure. Now OS will not load, I get vaio screen and than F8 to give me different options to start, will not start in any mode including safe mode. I have back up on external drive few months back, which is 168gb, is there any way I can restore from back up?

That depends on what software you used to make the restore file and whether or not it is a full image file capable of doing so. Or is the backup only files and data? You need to tell us more for us to help you.

It is complete system back up as image file, no external app was used, windows give you option to back up system on external drive. Total size is 168GB( OS plus all other files on pc) OR do I have any better or easier choice to repair vista?

Older versions of Windows Backup required you to install Windows first before restoring backup file I believe.

The dvd is for installing Vista, not running it as I assume it is a Windows dvd.  If you install Vista and you have to boot to the dvd to do so, then you can bring back from the restore you did assuming I know everything I need to know about this.

Yes, it is new Windows Vista dvd, not a back up from my PC.

Thanks for all your help.

I hope you did a backup of your current, your recent, data folders and files onto external media (via a usb or dvd Puppy Linux boot, Macrium Reflect boot, or anything similar) before you re-installed Vista or its Backup/Restore function, or restorred that months-old backup.
