I recently ran the Windows Repair Tool from Tweaking.com and the SFC scannow step would not work. I would get the error message " Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation".  I need assistance in guiding the scannow too work again.

I ran the Windows Repair as a check after a possible malware infection and/or an accidental re-directed visit to a malware site. Various malware scanners failed to find any virus/trojans. (Malwarebytes-free, Supper Anti-Spyware, Avast-free, ESET, Sophos). I tried running rkill and doing this in SAFE-MODE in most instances. It seems I have an OS Corruption problem rather than a malware problem.

CheckDisk was run and although it found errors I was able to run this and  after 4+ hours it fixed everything.

I ran the regular Window Repairs step about 2 times in Safe mode. I backed-up and set restore points first. [Note: Restore points did not seem to set per later check possibly because this was done in SAFE MODE]

After reading some articles online I found that the DISM program had to run to replace and fix the scannow. I ran the SoftwareRepairTool.exe from Microsoft. This runs the DISM program among other things. This did not fix things. I got the error that DISM could not find the source files.

I then downloaded the Windows10 iso from Microsoft site. I saved this in my "Downloads" folder and extracted the files with 7-zip to find the source files which were needed. Articles seemed to state that install.wim(esd) was the needed file. I copied all files including install.esd to a folder in downloads, C:\Users\OWNER\Documents\Downloads\WIN10_sources.

http://www.thewindowsclub.com/component-store-corruption-repair-windows-image

Gave instructions telling DISM needed and how to run RestoreHealth etc. functions.

I ran the ScanHealth and saved the log. It stated the system was “repairable”.

https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/7808-dism-repair-windows-10-image.html

Very good tutorial! . Followed Step 7 since I had install.esd in the above folder. This still did not work after running in the  CMD Window (Admnistrator privileges always used for this)

Per site ran the below using my source path:[attachment=190826:DISM error msg 2-24-2017 Capture.JPG][attachment=190827:dism log_2-24-2017.txt]

(To prevent DISM from using Windows Update for online images)
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:esd:Full Path to install.esd file:1 /limitaccess

Dism /Online  /Cleanup-Image  /RestoreHealth /Source:esd:  C:\Users\OWNER\Documents\Downloads\WIN10_sources\install.esd:1  /LimitAccess

This did not work as after running at about 92% done I got error message that Source files could not be found. I ran this several times in varying ways. I also tried running a program to convert the install.esd to install.wim format, placing this in the Windows10_Source folder in addition. Still no success in getting DISM to run successfully.

At this point I do not know what to do and I need more experienced guidance. I may need to do a partial re-install of my operating system at this point while keeping my files. I have a backup on an external drive and will get a System Image prior to doing anything else.

I appreciate any assistance.  Other logs available if requested. Thanks.

Tried this fix per http://www.thewindowsclub.com/repair-corrupt-windows-image-error-0x800f0906  but this did not help

Repair Corrupt Windows Image

After doing some research about this error, I found that the following solution may work in this situation. The fix to the error goes like this:

1. Open administrative Command Prompt.

2. Copy the following code and right click paste it into Command Prompt:

net stop wuauserv

cd %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution

ren Download Download.old

net start wuauserv

net stop bits

net start bits

net stop cryptsvc

cd %systemroot%\system32

ren catroot2 catroot2old

net start cryptsvc

It looks like the sfc Component Store has some corruption and is not responding to the DISM commands.  I would suggest doing a Reset.  This basically will reinstall Windows 10, this has the option to save you personal data.  The only down side is that this will uninstall any third party programs you have installed.

A Windows 10 Reset will reinstall the operating system.  You have the option to keep your personal files or remove them.

1. Open the Start Menu and click/tap of Settings.

When Settings opens select Update & Security

Settings%20w10_zpshotznunu.png

2. Click/tap on Recovery, then Get Started.

settings%20w10-2_zpslwcrdejs.png

3. You will now have the option to Keep my files or Remove everything.  Click/tap on the option you want.

Settings%20w%2010-3_zpsjcoecsv4.png

4. You will now receive the message Getting things ready, Windows will list the programs which you will need to reinstall.  You may find it beneficial to copy these programs for a reference later.  When the list of programs is shown click/tap on Next.

If you have recently installed this operating system you will receive the message below.

Setting%20w10-4_zps9ejgxhyo.png

5. You will now receive the message Ready to reset this PC, select Reset.

The installation will continue without any need to make any other selections.

Another option is to do an in-place upgrade A.K.A. a repair install. giude found here https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/16397-repair-install-windows-10-place-upgrade.html. This will save all user info and files. I am not certain if it will keep 3rd party apps and programs, so have them ready. Keep in mind you have to go x86 to x86 or x64 to x64 only a full install can change the system type or bitrate for a lack of a better term.

This will not remove the third party programs, but it will remove all of the Windows 10 updates that were installed after the initial installation of the operating system.

This is an option I had considered using, but the OP was not able to mount the ISO file and run the command needed to rebuild the sfc Component Store.  The DISM command failed because the component store has file corruption, this would have repaired this and they should have been able to repair the corrupt files found in the sfc /scannow this with the DISM commands.  Because the OP was not able to do this I feel that the only option they could manage was the Reset.

Hi

Before resetting or doing a repair install, could you run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth again?

If it fails, attach the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log (I know, it is strange that DISM information isn't fully outputted to DISM log)

He could also burn the ISO to disk or usb drive. I have had success with a disk when mounting was not working. I always run my installs from a disk or USB Drive if not being installed on a VM.

CKing123 has received specialized training if analyzing sfc /scannow issues, this includes the DISM log and its significance.  I will leave this in their capable hands.

I have run the DISM scan several times earlier but it has failed all times.

I can attach logs of the following but they are TOO LARGE and probably cobined logs of several runs. How can I reduce this easily and send it to you? I do not know how to easly find begin/end points.

        1) DISM ScanHealth
         2) CBS log (this may be several run logs combined but it is hard to tell when each began/ended [Last logs run on 2-23-2017]

Hi

The forums have a limit on file size of each file. Could you use a service like OneDrive or Sharespace, and post the share link here?

I have sourced most of the files, but only some are left. I will be finishing that when I go home :)

Also something to note: There are some audio related files corrupt. Are you having any issues with audio playing or something with the speakers? (These will be fixed when the files are replaced)

I have some occasional instances whereby the audio would stop playing when streaming a video.  This did not seem to be browser dependent as it occurred in both Firefox and Chrome.

Also, I do sometimes get a "humming" sound from my speakers. (This may be a separate issue)

Thanks for looking at the logs. Hopefully we can find and replace the corrupt files and avoid a complete re-install of Windows 10.

I downloaded and ran the program with the script as directed. As a precaution to avoid a conflict I turned OFF my Avast AV first.

I ran the SFCFix successfully and I am posting the log. I also re-ran the DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and this ran successfully; the log for this is posted as well.
However, I then ran the sfc /scannow while still in the CMD (Administrator mode) and it did not work; it stopped at about 32% as usual and stated Windows Resource Protection could not perform operation.

C:\WINDOWS\system32>sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 31% complete.

Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.
