Today I got a message saying that a program was trying to shut down Avast's real time protection. Then I saw that both Windows Defender and Avast had been shut down, and at first I could not restart them. Now it seems like they have both been turned on again, but I am worried that I have a virus that is causing these issues? I'm currently scanning my computer, but nothing has been found (yet).

Can someone please help me?

Try uninstalling Avast and reinstalling it.

In Windows 8.1 if another antivirus is installed this will disable the Windows Defender antivirus.  If there is a problem with the other antivirus this could cause the Home defender to enable itself.

If this doesn't resolve this issue I would suggest requesting that this topic be moved to the Am I Infected forum.
