FRST running very slow

Hi everyone,

I don't know how I initially found this site (Maximum PC maybe? years ago). I've been fortunate enough to have never needed help until now. I had an issue with links from facebook while using Chrome. I had a problem where if I clicked on one of those posts that start off with "21 things that...". The page would open in a new tab, when I got down to the bottom of the page and clicked "Next", a new tab would open that contained the next few items in the list but the original tab would change to something saying that my computer was infected, call Microsoft, blah blah blah.  I then tried doing the same thing with Firefox (facebook, open one of those 21 things posts) and the extra tab did not open nor did I get any message about being infected. It seemed to be a Chrome only issue. I knew I was infected. I ran SUPER AntiSpyware and then Malwarebytes and cleaned what they found. Mostly tracking cookies. I rebooted after running each program. Something still didn't (and still doesn't) feel right with my system. I can't get Dashlane to open up. I get a message that "Your system administrator has blocked this program...".


I came here, read the pinned posts about how to ask for help and read some posts asking for help. Very interesting stuff! I consider myself an advanced/experienced user but I know enough not to do what I don't know about! I started running FRST yesterday (2/16)at about noon time. Almost 36 hours later it is still running! Does it usually take this long? Right now the green bar is moving rather slowly. When I started yesterday, it was moving quicker. Right near the top left, it says "Scanning Edge", the search box is empty. Any idea how long this will take?


Once I am done with FRST, hopefully by the time I get home from work tomorrow, do I start a new post in "Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs" section? This section clearly says "No DDS, FRST, HijackThis, or ComboFix logs should be posted in this forum."

If you are still having problems completing the FRST scan then you can post in the malware removal forum without

the logs. Just be sure to mention right off the problem with FRST.


Please follow the instructions in the Malware Removal and Log Section Preparation Guide starting at Step 6.

  • If you cannot complete a step, then skip it and continue with the next.
  • In Step 6 there are instructions for downloading and running FRST which will create two logs.

When you have done that, post your logs in the Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs forum, NOT here, for assistance by the Malware Response Team.

Start a new topic, give it a relevant title and post your log(s) along with a brief description of your problem, a summary of any anti-malware tools you have used and a summary of any steps that you have performed on your own. If you cannot produce any of the required logs...start the new topic anyway. Explain that you followed the Prep. Guide, were unable to create the logs, and describe what happened when you tried to create them. A member of the Malware Removal Team will walk you through, step by step, on how to clean your computer.

After doing this, please reply back in this thread with a link to the new topic so we can close this one.
