Silly question, but am I able to use something like Veracrypt to encrypt an existing drive with data on, other than using Bitlocker?

You could create an encrypted container and move the files into it. You need to have Veracrypt installed on the computer the external is attached to or at least have admin rights to use portable mode.

If you decide to encrypt the full drive with password you would first need to move the data off the drive before creating the encrypted partition.

Thanks JohnC - I thought that was the case.

I suppose you can never have enough backups though!
