Sound icon has a red x and gives the message 'No Audio Output Device is installed.'

Device Manager shows 'Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)'

It did have code 32 earlier!

I've reverted to a recovery from before the fault occurred but that didn't help.

I've reinstalled the drivers but that didn't help.

It all happened when I got a network glitch accessing a network drive. The problems started on the reload after that.

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

Go to Piriform's website, and download the free version on the left.  Click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version. You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.

After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.

Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course):

post-33068-0-86653600-1480692866_thumb.j

Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot.

Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard

Now, once you are back in the forum topic you are posting in, click the ADD REPLY or REPLY TO THIS TOPIC button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Add Reply below the Reply box.

You have a hard drive with a possible manufacture date of 2009.  Although hard drive failure is not truly predictable based on use...the hard drive failure rate for all drives should make this a cause for concern, IMO.  When I combine this point of view with the hard drive controller error posted in Event Viewer data above...that increases cause for concern.

In truth...I don't believe the problem is related to audio at all...but to your hard drive itself.

Assuming that all valued data has been backed up...I suggest running the Western Digital hard drive diagnostic on the drive.

Moving topic to Internal Hardware from Win 7.  The more know, ledgeable in that forum can advise you on whether my line of thought is valid...and what steps to take..

Louis

I have run the Western Digital extended test. No problems found!

The error you mention was just a missing file, not a drive failure!

Please put the thread back.

Open the Device Manager, go down to Sound, video and game controllers to see if there are any yellow warning icons or red error icons.  If there are click on the driver tab and uninstall the driver.  When you restart the computer a new driver will be installed.

Reinstalling the drivers does not fix the fault.

Reinstalling Windows has sorted it!!!

There's nothing wrong with my sound card! See my earlier post! It's a laptop too! A new laptop would probably work out quicker and cheaper than changing a laptop's sound card!

Reinstalling Windows has sorted it!!!

Glad to see that you have resolved this.  Reinstalling the operating system is usually one of the last suggestions I would make since there are other options that are usually much easier and take less time.  With Windows 7 you could do a Repair Installation if you have the installation media.  This accesses the System Recovery Options, one of these is the Startup Repair which can be more effective when it's run from the installation media.

bob-bob-bobbing is absolutely correct. If you had taken the time to read just the beginning of the MiniToolBox report it post #3 you would have seen that this computer is a Compaq Presario CQ61 Notebook.  Laptops and notebooks don't come with audio cards.  They use integrated audio, this is a integrated circuit on the motherboard (a chip).

Arachibutyrophobia, thanks for that.

I had actually spent a great amount of time already trying to find ANY solution!

The biggest problem with what I have done is that I got back the Windows Update error which is a pain to fix.

I need to make a new .iso for the system with the updates applied so that at least this option takes less time. Is this possible?

I must learn about repair, but would it have worked???

There is a process called Slipstreaming.  An example of this would be slipstreaming service pack 1 in the installation disc for Windows 7.  You can find a good tutorial for slipstreaming the Windows 7 installation media along with the Convenience Roolup for Windows 7 here.
