this was started in the Windows 10 forum, but was not helped:

CASE:

On Feb 6, 2017 I installed the latest Windows 10 updates. It had been scheduled for a late night install, but I decided to do it earlier. I noticed that it seemed to take quite a long time, especially since I always install them as they become available. After doing the install and rebooting, the lock screen appeared but when I tapped on the keyboard to get to the login screen the PC just froze and after a while returned to the lock screen with  the time and date. It appears that the lock screen darkens slightly and expands slightly as if to rise up and permit the login, but then freezes.

I was able to use the Shift + power button/restart to get to the trouble shooting option, but resetting to an earlier restore point fails, unable to extract a file, and using the reset option gets about 12% done before it also rolls back.

I then tried using Kaspersky Rescue disk 10 to do an A-V scan but after accepting the EULA it just freezes.

I do have a system recovery disk, but since Kaspersky has failed to allow for a scan, I am afraid that I may just be masking something worse. I am running Windows 10 Anniversary edition on a home built AMD Athlon II with 16Ghz ram 2 TB HD system drive + 1.5 TB second internal drive and 2 2TB external HD's.

Help would be greatly welcome...

UPDATE:

Repeated attempts to repair via the several Shift + Restart options fail, though rollback to a restore point did run several times to no effect, the login screen does not appear after the lock screen. 'Startup Repair' fails as does 'System Restore and keep personal files' or the 'System Recovery' disc option.

MALWARE or OS/PROFILE corruption? Having tried many options based on OS/PROFILE corruption, tried several attempts at AV scanning from a DVD-booted based option: Kaspersky Disk 10 after many attempts finally loaded the graphical mode then fails over to the text mode. Command to run update of the db appears to download files - after many attempts to reach the ftp server fail, but then hangs up and does not install them. Attempted to use Trinity Rescue Kit and select one of the AV programs but each attempt to install updates fail as well...

Not sure how to proceed? Can't login to the Win10 OS or update/install any AV programs via a DVD-based boot bypass and scan option...

Any thoughts...?

Hi Lefty Widdagun!

Can you access Safe mode?
You can access it by shift+Restart option you have been using so far
and accessing Troubleshoot->Advanced Options->Startup settings->Enable Safe Mode.
You can find graphical instructions from here.

Do you get any error message or code on failure?

no messages, just the dark screen ... but all the other errors? And the inability to repair by any of the reported 'improved' windows 10 restore options ...every one fails!

Is no one else having this lockout from the login screen from the lock screen? And this just after installing the MS Updates? I have Googled this and can find nothing...

Fact that Kaspersky and System Recovery Disk have failed seems to indicate some hardware problem.

Can you access Safe mode with Command prompt?

If so run following command in console:

chkdsk C:

If your Windows installation is in another disk replace C with the correct drive letter.
