Running Windows 7, plenty of RAM and CPU power.

 

I've always been able to run my Acronis software. Now when I try to us it, it brings up a screen saying I need an administrator password. Only problem is, it won't accept any typing of any kind and the "yes" box is not avavible . I've tried to go through the the management control feature but same thing happens. Won't let me do anything because of the administrator password problem.

 

This is all new since I last run it on 12/28/2016. Would the last Microsoft update #KB3212646 dated 1/12/2017s have anything to do with it?

 

I'm stuck, any help is greatly appreciated..

Yes but I still can't control the "access" to passwords or administrator info either

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.
 
Checkmark the following checkboxes:
  List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
  List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
 
Click Go and paste the content into your next post.
 
Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

   Go to Piriform's website, and download the free version on the left.  Click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version. You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.

    After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.
 
     Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course):

     Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot.

     Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard

Now, once you are back in the forum topic you are posting in, click the ADD REPLY or REPLY TO THIS TOPIC button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Add Reply below the Reply box.

Louis, I tried to open/run Speccy but it's asking for the administrator password which is one of my problems..the file name downloaded is "Spsetup130" but I can't run it.

Any suggestions?

I just downloaded and installed that version of Speccy...I was not asked for any password.

 

Your problems do not lie with the program, they lie with your system...which seems to prevent you from installing/running programs.  Which is contradicted by your installation of MiniToolBox.

Louis, I agree, I have a system problem, not a program problem. I didn't have to log in to run the minitoolbox.(see top of the report results here,)

Before I hypothesize about the unknown (to me)...I would have to see the Speccy data, looking for clues.  You have a disk drive error message...which could be meaningful.  A look at the processes might provide more evidence of what may be wrong.

 

Although I know that many like to blame MS when things go wrong with their systems...I doubt that any Windows Update would have changed your permissions, which (IMO) seems to be the case.  Such a change would not necessarily be uncharacteristic of malware...but it would be entirely uncharacteristic of Windows updates via the MS website.

 

There seems to be a portable version of Speccy that you might try:  https://www.piriform.com/speccy/download/portable .

Louis, I tried the portable file access and get the same problem. "Requires an administrator password to run it"........(Damn)
Are there any other ways for me to get you the picture/data you want to look at??

The Speccy data is pretty comprehensive...no, the Snapshot is the only way of capturing it in entirely without more work than is warranted.

 

Sounds to me like a UAC prompt...you can try disabling UAC.

I suspect this is related to your UAC (User Account Control). 

 

Open the Start menu and type UAC, UAC or User Account Control will appear in the results above the search box.  Click on this.

 

When the UAC open you will see a slide control, move it down toward the bottom, then press OK.

Can you boot into Safe Mode and access the UAC?

 

Do you have a password that needs to be used when the computer starts?

 

Can you access the User Accounts in the Control Panel?  If you can try to create another Admin. account and see if this works when you use it.

I'll answer your questions in the order presented.
1. I don't know how to start in safe mode but doubt it would allow me to make changes.

2.I don't need a password when the computer starts (or anytime for that matter)

3. Can't access UAC without the admin password through the control panel. Even if I knew it the area to input a password is not available. Only thing it will allow is the "No" response.

I've tried everything suggested and anything I can think of but nothing has worked. This computer has a mind of it's own. I've got a feeling that whatever is causing this came through during one of the MS automatic update. Some time ago, my ability to change when MS updates were installed became unavailable to me. Doesn't that sound like something that MS did?

Maybe I'll just have to pay for a "teckie" to come fix it..........:-(
