i have recently installed windows 8.1 and its working fine. but the brightness was not working at all. then i did the following to find a solution..

1) I opened the device manager and click on the display adapter.

2) i click on update driver option.

3) then i  click on  the 2nd  option "brows my computer for driver software"

4) I click on "let me pick from the list of device drivers"

5) i select 'microsoft basic display adapter" ( as it was the only available driver) and click on next...

as it was updated but still the brightness is not working..

any solution please???????

i select 'microsoft basic display adapter"

This is likely your problem.

When posting it is always a good idea to include basic details of your computer - such as, at a minimum, the make and model - but I suggest you go to the manufacturer's web-site and download and install the latest video drivers for your computer or mobo and your OS.

Open the Control Panel, click Power Options. click the "Change plan settings" link, next "Change advanced power settings", try to turn off "Enable adaptive brightness" option.

Yesterday I ran into the same issue as you. For unknown reasons, video drivers seemed to be uninstalled and the option to change brightness was missing. I tried to download device drivers and reinstall them, but kept failed. Eventually I chosen to restore my system to a recent backup point, and the option to change brightness is back now. Hope this way will also work with you.
