MacBook Pro 10.6.8 [2010]

1. I ran a permissions check using disk utility. I run it periodically and it always has a list of mismatched permissions which it repairs. I can't say I've ever noticed any change before or after repairs. Today I got a warning that a problem could not be repaired.

Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAgent" has been modified and will not be repaired.

I don't have remote login, remote management or remote apple events checked in sharing if that is the core services it's referencing. Is there anything I can or should do about this warning?

2. I'm trying to troubleshoot the problem that my browsers keep crashing, requiring force quit and occasionally freezing my whole computer so I have to shut down by pushing the off button.  I suspect that the problem is the browsers need to be upgraded and that requires updating my mac os. So I'm also preparing to upgrade to el capitan if I can't otherwise solve the problem. So I've run the hardware check by holding down the D on bootup and I've run the drive check in disk utility. I'm planning on running a malware checker and on reading about different options in the posts I came across Etrecheck and actually ran it.

The HD report says I have a Hitachi Travelstar 7K500, which is a smart drive and smart support is enabled. Once upon a time I knew what a SMART drive was but now I don't. The overall health assessment was "passed". But It also says no self-tests have ever been run and to run one use "smartctl -t" which I guess is a terminal command. I'm guessing you do that boot into a command like program.

There's a table of values tested by Etrecheck like raw read-error-rates and seek_error_rates with values or terms such as old_age and pre_fail. Lots of old-ages and pre-fails.

Is my HD failing? I don't want to do all the upgrade work if I have to replace the HD. Should I run the self test and how do I do that?

Below is the full report:

You can disregard that DU warning.

DU Repair Disk messages that you can ignore.

If SMART passed and DU hard drive verification passes without any errors, then the hard drive is fine. Just keep a backup of all your files just in case for some reason the boot disk fails.

Your browser is probably outdated for some sites. Apple has discontinued supporting OS X 10.6.8.
