I was burning a BD with ImgBurn and came back to check on the progress. My PC was shut down, but promptly restarted. Once it booted up and home screen came on, a dialouge box for OpenOffice pops up "Either another instance of Openoffice is accessing your personalsettings or your personal...." and before I can click on yes or no, my PC shuts down again. If I dont just shut the power off, it cycles though this over and over. It wont stay on long enough for me do anything. What are my options to resolve this? Im guessing going into safe mode and deleteing the software. But I dont know how to do that. Or possibly going back to a restore point, which I would prefer not doing. Any suggestions/help would be awesome. Thanks.

Thank you. Oddly enough when I came home tonight my PC booted and stayed long enough for me to uninstall OpenOffice. But after about five minutes, it just shut down. I booted again and within 1 min, it shut down. Any ideas what I should try to do?

Try the following from normal boot mode...if unsuccessful, then try it from safe mode.

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

Go to Piriform's website, and download the free version on the left.  Click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version. You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.

After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.

Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course):

post-33068-0-86653600-1480692866_thumb.j

Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot.

Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard

Now, once you are back in the forum topic you are posting in, click the ADD REPLY or REPLY TO THIS TOPIC button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Add Reply below the Reply box.

Quote from Wiki"The free version of AVC installs browser-hijacks.[12] Not to mention numerous PUPs (at least 14) and fake anti-malware which is known to flood a system with pop-ups. It does not offer options to remove in Custom Set-up and forces free users into this position by having the free version apparently 'break' and be unable to d/load due to 'failed analysis', while promising the update will fix these problems."

Thanks. I will uninstall that, but will that remove what you mentioned? I think this problem occurred from some issue with OpenOffice though. What should my next step be?

Have you tried using System Restore to return to a previous state before the problems began?

No, not yet. I was trying to avoid that and figure out what might be the issue. I dont know if its hardware, software or malware. Ive checked hardware temps and all is good. Hopefully I have a fairly recent restore point.

As I said we could run some scans but if the issue is not malware related, it most likely will continue. In such cases, restoring to an earlier restore point before the point occurred is usually more successful.

I guess Ill try that. Problem is, I dont know how long the PC will stay on before it shuts down. Id hate to be in the middle of a restore and it shut down. Im assuming I can do it in safe mode. Ill open safe mode and let it sit for a while and see if the problem still occurs. When it shuts down, its not a reboot. Its like someone cuts the power to the PC. When I boot back up, I get the screen that says I didnt shut down properly. Also, it sometimes gives me a "one of your discs needs to be checked for consistency" pages. What is that? Im wondering if this might be a power supply related issue? Can malware cause a hard shutdown like this?

There was an older malware years ago which shut down the computer...it was called Win32/Sasser is an older infection and it targeted a security issue with the Local Security Authority Subsystem Service (LSASS). Symptoms of infection included the computer repeatedly shutting down, random reboots or receiving an LSA Shell crash dialog box with the error message: "LSA Shell [Export Version] has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." Infected users also received a System Shutdown dialog box with the message: "This system is shutting down. Please save all work...This shutdown was initiated by NT Authority\System...The system process 'C:\Windows\systen32\lsass.exe' terminated unexpectanly with status code 0. The system will now shut down and restart" Microsoft addressed this vulnerability with a security update many years ago and we have not seen a case like that in a long time so I doubt your problem is related to it.

More likely the "one of your disks needs to be checked for consistency" error is the cause since it is very common.

It could be related to hardware as noted by an HP expert in this topic...it could also be related to Chkdsk and dirty volumes as described here

Volumes with file system errors are known as "dirty volumes" and you have to run Chkdsk on the volume to repair the errors. The dirty flag on a NTFS volume usually means that the file system is in an inconsistent state due to:
  • The volume is online and has outstanding changes.
  • Changes were made to the volume and the computer was shut down before the changes were committed to the disk (crash).
  • Corruption was detected on the volume.
  • Power loss during a read-right operation on that particular drive.
Autochk runs the repair process at startup if volumes are flagged as dirty after the file system detects an error on the volume. When booting your computer, autochk.exe (a version of Chkdsk that runs only before the machine starts) is called by the Kernel to scan all volumes to check if the volume dirty bit is set. If the dirty bit is set, autochk performs an immediate chkdsk /f on that volume, verifies file system integrity and attempts to fix any problems with the volume.

When the computer is restarted, Chkdsk runs at startup to verify the consistency of the volume.

I specialize in malware issues so you may want to start a topic in the Windows OS forum where those most knowledgeable than I am can offer suggestions.

It was originally in that forum but was moved here by a moderator. I briefly looked at restoring and I dont think it has restore point to restore to. I guess I could look for any malware, just in case. What should I run to check for it? Thanks!

Please download Emsisoft Emergency Kit and perform a scan following these instructions. After the scan completes, copy and paste the contents of EEK's scan log in your next reply.

Please download AdwCleaner and perform a scan following these instructions.-- Note: The contents of the AdwCleaner log file may be confusing. Unless you see a program name or entry that you recognize and know should not be removed, don't worry about it. If you see an entry you want to keep, return to AdwCleaner before cleaning...all detected items will be listed (and checked) in each tab. Click on and uncheck any items you want to keep.

Copy and paste the contents of AdwCleaner[CX].txt in your next reply.
