Hello,

 

I cannot view pictures on my PC.  The thumbnails are fine but I cannot open to view any.

 

I receive the following pop-up:

 

 

COM Surrogate

 

COM Surrogate had stopped working.  Windows can check online for a solution to the problem.

 

->Check online for a solution and close the program

 

-> Close the program

It happened here and there for about two days and now every time I cannot open images.  I tried the "check online for a solution" option, but it didn't work. 

 

I looked into the issue and tried this to no avail:

 

1. Click Start, type cmd, right-click and select Run as administrator.

2. Run the following commands:

 

regsvr32 vbscript.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll

 

Both the commands said they were successful, but even after a reboot I still cannot view my pictures.

 

Any ideas?  Thanks!

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.
 
Checkmark the following checkboxes:
  List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
  List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
 
Click Go and paste the content into your next post.
 
Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

   Go to Piriform's website, and download the free version on the left.  Click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version. You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.

    After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.
 
     Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course):

     Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot.

     Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard

Now, once you are back in the forum topic you are posting in, click the ADD REPLY or REPLY TO THIS TOPIC button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Add Reply below the Reply box.

I think it's strange, looking at the MTB and Speccy reports...Something is eating up a lot of my memory.  Also, I have no idea why WU shows up as "start pending" because I stopped it again within the past hour.  (I always keep a close eye on it.)

Ah, I see, I don't know how but WU was set to check for updates daily.  I just set it back to never check.  I tried to stop WU again just now but it did not respond in "a timely fashion."  I'll try again to stop it.

I don't see anything unusual about RAM usage.

 

The Windows Update problem is a common one...take a look through some of the topics on same here in the Win 7 forum.

 

The COM Surrogate (dllhost.exe) errors appear to be the possible result of file corruption/damage.  You can try running the sfc /scannow command to check for corrupt system files.

Download XnView Standart in zip format. Unzip the file to a folder on your desktop. Double click the XnView exe file. Uncheck all boxes under System Integration. When XnView opens browse to the folder of your image files. Double click an image. Do you still get the same error.

I am able to view files in the XnView browser.  I still receive the error when trying to open the file directly from a folder rather than through XnView.  Thank you for checking this out for me; I work very heavily with images.

What is the default application you use to view images?  Right-click on any image and elect to use something other than what you were using as the default.

If the zipped version worked you may want to use the exe installer version and then set the images to open in the settings section of XnViewer. This way you can double click on any image and XnViewer will open.

Well, I was simply using Windows Photo Viewer (I like it best.)  I cannot open them in Windows Media Centre (I get an error that says it has stopped working) or with Windows Photo Gallery...oh, I was just about to try some other programs (non windows) but right now I cannot right click or open anything at all -files or folders.  It's unresponsive.  

 

Edit:  My desktop only is unresponsive.  Using the start menu currently works.

Strange as sfc /scannow reported no errors. I am not sure what else to attempt. Do the images open normally in Safe Mode?
