Hi,

when I open the browser sometimes IE tells me that a pop-up was blocked... I've got a blank page as a start page so I think I've got something wrong with my PC.

Here's the two Frabars log for anyone who wants to help me.

Thank you in advance :)

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer!

I am HelpBot: an automated program designed to help the Bleeping Computer Staff better assist you! This message contains very important information, so please read through all of it before doing anything.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

step1.gif In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resource! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/638175 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

step2.gifIf you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new FRST log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download FRST by Farbar from the following link if you no longer have it available and save it to your destop.

    FRST Download Link

  • When you go to the above page, there will be 32-bit and 64-bit downloads available. Please click on the appropriate one for your version of Windows. If you are unsure as to whether your Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit, please see this tutorial.
  • Double click on the FRST icon and allow it to run.
  • Agree to the usage agreement and FRST will open. Do not make any changes and click on the Scan button.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Post the new logs as explained in the prep guide.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

StephanoT:

:welcome: to the Bleeping Computer Virus, Trojans, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs Forum.  My name is Phil and  I would like to address you by your first name, if that is alright with you since we will be working together.  I apologize for the delay in your logs being assigned.  This is a very busy Forum, but from now on, responses will be much quicker.

I will be assisting you with your computer issues.  I will endeavor to respond within a reasonable time, normally 48 hours after your last post.

I will need some time to review your FRST logs.  That could take a day or two.

PLEASE DO NOT RUN ANY ADDITIONAL SCANS OR ANTI-MALWARE REMOVAL TOOLS UNTIL YOU HAVE RECEIVED A RESPONSE FROM ME.
Doing so would complicate the situation and it would cause further delays in resolving your issues.  It could also potentially result in harm to your computer because my "fix" will be based on the FRST scan logs you have already submitted.

Thank you and have a great day.

Regards,
-Phil

Stephano:

Thank you for your patience while I analyzed your FRST logs, and thank you for permitting me to address you by your first name. :) One never knows what one will find, or how long the logs will be, so I like to give myself a lot of time, just in case.

In the future, I am going to ask you to copy and paste all of the logs, and log results, into your posts, rather than attaching them. This makes it quicker for me to analyze them.

.

Before we start dealing with the problems you are experiencing, I would ask that you to take note of the following points:

  • I am a Bleeping Computer volunteer, so I ask you to be patient. I know it is frustrating when your computer is not working properly, but malware removal takes time.
  • Please also remember that I only dedicate a limited number of hours a day to helping people. We may live in different time zones, which may cause delays in responding.
  • If I have not responded to you within 48 hours, please send me a personal message. Likewise, I expect you to respond within 48 hours, and sooner is better because we can fix your computer faster.
  • If I have not heard from you in three days, I will "bump" your post. After five days of no response, I will consider that you no longer need my assistance and this thread will be closed.
  • Logs can take a while to research, so please be patient.
  • Some issues just cannot be solved so you must be prepared for this.
  • Please read and follow the instructions in the exact sequence that they are posted to avoid making a bad situation worse.
  • Please print or copy and save the instructions.
  • Back up all your data and important files on another (external) drive before starting to run malware removal tools.
  • You should try to limit your browsing with this computer until you are given the "All Clear." Some malware applications steal passwords.
  • Please do not install or uninstall any applications, unless directed. Don't run any scripts or tools on your own because unsupervised usage may cause more harm than good.
  • Please use only the tools you have been instructed to use.
  • If you are using CD/DVD emulation software, this should be uninstalled or disabled as it can interfere with the removal of some malware. It can be turned off with Defogger and then turned back on when you get the "All Clear."
  • Please copy and paste the requested log files inside your post, unless otherwise instructed.
  • There are no silly questions. Ask for clarification, if you have any questions or concerns.
  • Bleeping Computer does not support any piracy. Evidence of illegal OS, software, cracks/keygens, etc., will be revealed by scan logs, and if found, further assistance may be suspended. Uninstall such software before proceeding!
  • Any P2P software such as uTorrent, BitTorrent, Kazaa, etc. must be uninstalled or completely disabled. P2P software is a major security risk to your computer and may have been the route the malware used to infect your computer.
  • Failure to follow these guidelines may result in assistance being withdrawn and your thread being closed.
  • I am volunteering my time to help you, and I will need you to help me. Together, we can, hopefully, disinfect your computer and get if functioning properly again. That is my only aim.

.

OK, let's get started ...

.

:step1: Please run a FRST "Fix" for me, but before you do so, would you please rename FRST64.exe, on your Desktop, to FRST64english.exe. That will force English language output. I apologize, but I don't speak any Italian; just English and a bit of French.

Copy and paste the text in the code box below into Notepad and save the file as fixlist.txt to the Desktop.

NOTE: It is important that both files, FRST64english.exe and fixlist.txt are both in the same folder or the fix will not work.

NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on this individual computer. Running this on another computer may cause damage to your operating system.

  • Right click FRST64english.exe, and select "Run as Administrator".
  • Then press the Fix button just once and wait.
  • If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
  • When finished FRST will generate a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please copy and paste the contents into your reply.

.

I am not seeing any evidence of any serious problems, although we will run a set of full security scans in later posts; and, as well, there are some other less serious issues that we will address later on.

.

:step2: Please reboot your computer after the FRST "fix" and let me know if there are still issues with your Internet browsers.  If so, please describe them, and which browser(s) is (are) affected?

.

Thank you and have a great day.

Regards,
-Phil

Stephano:

Wow!  Thanks for your quick response.  I guess after waiting more than five days, you were eager to get on with it! :)  I am really happy to hear that your browser is working OK again. :thumbup2:

The fixlog look great!   :thumbup2:  As you saw, we took out 928 MB of temp junk, so that alone would speed up your PC.  It is an i5, so it will never be a "beast", but we can push the limits.

I went looking for more information, in the fixlist.txt for the Benubird PDF program entry that I saw, but the FRST could not find the file.  Do you know what this program is?  It is not showing up on your list of installed programs?  It is a run entry in your Registry upon bootup, but if you check the fixlog.txt, it could not find it on Drive E:?  Was Drive E: connected when you ran the fixlist.txt?

Let's do some housekeeping next.

:step1: Your C: drive is pretty low on free space, and that can cause slow performance.  I see you don't have a lot of space on any of your drives.  If Windows runs out of room on the OS drive (C:), it can start doing a lot of thrashing around, negatively impacting performance.  Ideally, I would aim to get at least 20 GB free on the C: drive, if you can manage that.  You've got lots of RAM, but by its nature, Windows does a lot of caching and creating of temporary files.  If the space on the drive on which Windows is installed is down to less than 15 percent free, you may experience degraded performance.  Personally I would aim to keep at least 20 percent of my OS drive as free space.

.

:step2: By default, Restore Points in Windows 10 are disabled, and it is disabled on your computer.  You should turn Restore Points on, but then you would need to free up even more space on your C: drive.  It is your computer, so it is your call, but I would find some way to free up space on C:, and allocate at least 5 GB to restore points.  The instructions to turn on Restore Points can be found here.

.

:step3: Your version of Java is horribly out of date and that is a HUGE security vulnerability.  Your version is Java 8 Update 31.  The current version of Java is Version 8 Update 121.

In fact, unless you use Java, I would uninstall it.  I personally don't have it on my computer, once I learned about its many vulnerabilities, and I uninstalled it over a year ago on both of my computers, and I have never missed it.

If you want to continue to have Java on your computer, please uninstall your current version, via the Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs.  Then go to the Java site and download the latest version and install it.

.

I will be back online tomorrow afternoon, my time.  Once you have decided what YOU want to do about the issues that I identified above, then we will proceed to do some more anti-malware scans.

So, from you, in your next post, I would like you to provide the following:

  1. What do you know about the Benubird PDF program?  Why do you think FRST could not find it on your E: Drive?  Why would it be running on boot?
  2. Were you able to free up space on Drive C:?  If so, what is your free space on that drive now?
  3. Did you enable Restore Points?  If so, how much space did you allocate?
  4. Did you install the latest version of Java?

.

We'll have you up and running in no time.   :busy: Thank you and have a great day.

Regards,

-Phil

Hi Phil,

:) as soon as I saw your notification I did the scan! :) I was in front off the pc playing around :)

Your answer:

-What do you know about the Benubird PDF program?  Why do you think FRST could not find it on your E: Drive?  Why would it be running on boot?

I've got C drive (an SSD one), a E and a F drive all fixed drive... I can't immagine why FRST didn't find my E: HD :( and I never heard nothing about Benubird...

I use Visual Studio and SQL Server for my job and I've got a bounch of utility programs to help me... but I don't remeber Benubird...

-Were you able to free up space on Drive C:?  If so, what is your free space on that drive now?

I think that the only solution is buying a new ssd and expand the cutrrent one. I use to install all my programs in the other drives but Windows use the C: anyway...

So for now I'm still low... but I'll manage to increase that space.

-Did you enable Restore Points?  If so, how much space did you allocate?

Usually I don't enable Restore Point... do I really have to? :)

-Did you install the latest version of Java?

:) I use java only for one game in the internet... and it does not works with new version :) that's the reason of my obsolete java :)

See you tomorrow then, it's 22:11 PM in here and tomorrow will be Monday :(

You were very kind, thank you and sorry for my broken english :)

Stefano

Stefano:

Thank you for your post and for the answers to my questions. Please accept my apologies for not spelling your name correctly in my first posts.

OK, I think that we should rid your computer of that Benubird program, since you did not knowingly install it. More information can be found here about the Benubird PDF program. From what I can tell it is not malware.

HKLM-x32\...\Run: [Benubird PDF] => E:\Utilita\DMS\Benubird PDF\BenubirdAssistant.exe

I am going to take a look around your computer with a program called SystemLook to see what files and registry items might be located related to Benubird. After that, we will take action to get rid of it.

Are you able to navigate to this folder, using Total Commander or Windows File Explorer: E:\Utilita\DMS\Benubird PDF?

.

:step1: Please download SystemLook from the link below and save it to your Desktop.
For 64-bit versions of Windows: SystemLook_x64.exe

  • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
  • Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:
:filefind
*benubird*.*

:regfind
*benubird*
  • Click the Look button to start the scan. The scan could take some time, so please be patient.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please copy and paste the contents of this log into your next reply.

Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

.

No, you do not have to enable Restore Points. It is YOUR computer!

I was just making the suggestion since having restore points enabled has saved more than a few people from the serious issues that they have encountered, by being to "roll back" unwanted changes to their system files and programs. It is a good computer practice to have restore points enabled. All of that said, it is YOUR choice.

.

Thanks for the explanation of the old Java version. It is a security risk, but it is YOUR computer and if you are comfortable and like that game, then it is YOUR choice.

.

Your English is just fine. No apologies needed whatsoever. I wish that I could speak Italian as well as you speak English.

.

:step2: I want you to run the ESET Online Scanner using Internet Explorer:. It is a very thorough scanner and can take an hour or more to complete, depending on the number of files to be scanned. In your case, it could take several hours.

Note 1: These instructions are for Internet Explorer only! If you're using Chrome or Firefox, you will need to download and install the ESET Smart Installer tool before it can scan. See instructions here.
Note 2: You will need to disable your currently installed Anti-Virus, how to do so can be found here.

  • Download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click the icon.
  • Check YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click the Start button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Click Advanced settings.
  • Check the following items.

Enable detection of potentially unwanted applications
Remove found threats
Scan archives
Scan for potentially unsafe applications
Enable Anti-Stealth technology

  • Click Change next to Current scan targets:
  • Place a check mark in any additional drive you wish to scan then click OK.
  • Click Start.
  • ESET will then download updates and begin scanning your computer.
  • If no threats are found simply click Uninstall application on close and hit Finish.
  • If threats are found click List of found threats.
  • Click Export to text file.
  • Save the file on your Desktop as ESET.txt.
  • Click Back.
  • Check Uninstall application on close and Delete quarantined files.
  • Click Finish.
  • Close the ESET Online Scanner window.
  • Copy and paste the contents of ESET.txt into your reply, if any threats were detected.

Don't forget to re-enable your antivirus when finished!

.

:step3: Please copy and paste, into your next reply, the following:

  • the contents of the SystemLook scan log;
  • the answer as to whether you were able to navigate to the Benubird PDF folder on Drive E:, and,
  • the content of the ESET log, if there were any detections.

.

Thank you. Stefano, and have a great day. I will be back tomorrow in the morning to check for a response.

Regards,
-Phil

Hi Phil,

don't wory about my name's spelling :) wasn't a big mistake :)

Some ESET deletion were questionable in my opinion (like my genuine office 2000 iso... it was downloaded using our Microsoft subscription :) but doesn't matter)

Thanks for your help Phil!

Have a nice day

Stefano

Stefano:

Thanks for your post.

I did do a Google search for the file: of2010svsx86.iso. I am not suggesting that your version of the file was "pirated", but there are pirated versions out there in cyberspace.

Google returns many results, all which appear to be a questionable Torrent downloads, which is probably why ESET flagged it as a potentially unsafe application. Torrent downloads are notorious for bundling malware in their installer packages.

.

:step1: Let's remove the remnants of Benubird. Please run a FRST "Fix" for me.

CloseProcesses:

HKLM-x32\...\Run: [Benubird PDF] => E:\Utilita\DMS\Benubird PDF\BenubirdAssistant.exe
C:\Users\Stefano\AppData\Roaming\Softland\novaPDF\Add to Benubird PDF as PDF.nvl
C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\x64\3\Add to Benubird PDF as PDF.nvp
  • Right click FRST64english.exe, and select "Run as Administrator".
  • Then press the Fix button just once and wait.
  • If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
  • When finished FRST will generate a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please copy and paste the contents into your reply.

.

:step2: Please run a Malwarebytes Anti-Malware scan for me.

  • Please download Malwarebytes to your Desktop.
  • Double-click mb3-setup-1878.1878-3.5.1.2522.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • Then click Finish.
  • Once the program has fully updated, select Scan Now on the Dashboard. Or select the Threat Scan from the Scan menu.
  • If an update of the definitions is available, it will be downloaded and installed before the scan commences.
  • When the scan is complete, make sure that all Threats are selected, and click Remove Selected.
  • Restart your computer when prompted to do so.

The Scan log is available through History ->Application logs. Please copy and paste the contents of the log into your next reply.

.

Thank you and have a great day.

Regards,
-Phil

I'll copy and paste the two logs.

Phil, I just realized that I've installed the italian version of MalwareBytes :( :(

Do you want me to reinstall it in english? Sorry!!!

Thank you Phil,

Have a nice day.

Stefano:

Thank you for your post and for the Malwarebytes scan log. Don't worry about the Italian. It only found one potentially unwanted program. Unfortunately, I neglected to ask you to go into "Settings", "Protection", and turn on "Scan for rootkits", before you started the scan.

:step1: Would you do that for me, please, and then repeat the threat scan? Please copy and paste the contents of that log into your next reply.

.

:step2: Please download AdwCleaner by Malwarebytes and save the file to your Desktop.

  • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
Vista/Windows 7/8/10 users right-click and select Run As Administrator
  • The tool will start to update the database, please wait for it to complete the update.
  • Click on I Agree button.
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • AdwCleaner will begin...be patient as the scan may take some time to complete.
  • After the scan has finished, click on the Logfile button...a logfile (AdwCleaner[R#].txt) will open in Notepad for review (where the largest value of # represents the most recent report).
  • The contents of the log file may be confusing. Unless you see a program name that you know should not be removed, don't worry about it. If you see an entry you want to keep, let me know about it.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that logfile in your next reply.
  • A copy of all logfiles are saved in the C:\AdwCleaner folder which was created when running the tool.

.

:step3: Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.

  • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
  • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
  • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
  • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
  • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
  • Please copy and paste the contents of JRT.txt into your next message.

.

So far, things are looking good. Let's hope these scan don't detect anything too serious. Thank you and have a great day.

Regards,
-Phil

don't worry I'll do it the MalwareBytes scan again.

As you requested, at the end of all task I'll post the logs.

Thanks for your support Phil :)

See you soon
