How do I define the subnet to join in virtual box?  I am using 192.168.1.0/24.  The vm is giving me 10. addresses.  The program that I'm using requires me to be on the same subnet as the host I am trying to reach.

Have you tried a online subnet calculator?  http://www.subnet-calculator.com/
