Some pictures don't have a save option when tapping the menu button on the phone so I couldn't save them at all. Any idea, why?

If you press and hold the image does it give an option to save?

Yes. There is an option something like "save media". But it downloads a file which could not be opened (a file with white icon in download folder). Maybe it's the whole thread of the chat in another format. Not sure.

I can open the ones only downloaded via menu button if an option appears there.

I am not sure what the problem is, sorry. After saving does the image show up in the gallery app?

Edit: Does the file in the downloads folder have an extension. I found this but it's a bit old.

If downloaded via menu option "save", yes. Otherwise not!

Thanks.

The downloaded file has no extension. When adding .jpeg by renaming the file, it can be opened. Weird! Probably a bug.

(I didn't use Hangouts before. I just wanted give it a try because I didn't want to install Whatsapp.)

From the thread I linked to it was discussed as being a possible bug. Glad you sorted it out.
