Dearest Sirs n Siresses May I preface my plea with several hearty Thankies, Thank You, Thank you so very much. I know most of you have day or nite jobs that are certainly stressful n trying yet here you are peering over our tired pleas a pitiful plight. Tis a yoemans' service you provide. Mitey fine, mighty fine folks yee be. Thanky again.

I got several problems going at once.

A. This laptop no longer wirelessly connects to the internet, so I have hard wired it till some kind soul guides me thru the steps to fix whaever is in the way. It will connect if I unplug the router n replug it and the next time I start it up it will not automatically conect nor will it manually connect. Something is wacky.

B. I cain't git Mothers Cornpruter ta update. It has been checkin for about 4 hours now and has yet to produce a list of updates available, nor a declaration of no updates needed. Earlier this morning there were 127 optional updates listed and it was at a time when I could not get the wireless to access the internet. So time and time again I stumbled around trying to gain access and when finally the stars aligned lo n behold I was innerduced to the portal a pleasure, jackpot it connected.

Now sadly I see no updates and I got a sneeky suspicion somethin needs attention of the magic wand. After a few more hours stumblin around chasin sfc/scannow n not gettin the logs ta form in a manner that I understood how to read or post I have admitted my perplexity. I need more guidance and plainer instructions cuz well I cain't see my way outta a paper bag. So here is the log of the minitoolbox.

C. I see a bunch of errors noted in the MTB scan so if there is something we can do to clean up her machine I am game to try if you will guide.

Iffen you need some  more info or scans done just tell me how to get it and your will be done.

Happy to wait till one has a bit a time to tend to this conundrum. Thanks in advance.

My speccy snapshot if that is the correct term is located at   http://speccy.piriform.com/results/Q7NNZBSYZ8xfXHcs3XEMc3x

Holy moly got the CBS log  notepad and it is way long makes me wonder if I made a mistake, I will need some guidance on posting cuz well it is just so huge.

Let's take this one step at a time !

With one exception all your applicataion MS Office errors are connected with MS Bing Sports. If you are not a sports fan, uninstall this. If you are a sports fan then uninstall it and re-install it. If you cannot find it listed in 'Control panel - Programs and features' use the Revo uninstaller which you have installed. If you do want to re-install it, shut down and re-boot after you have done the uninstall.

All your code integrity errors are connected to the Dell package 'Getting started with Win 8.1'. This can safely be uninstalled in exactly the same way as Bing Sports.

For the system errors, run SFC /SCANNOW. To do this press the Win key and X together, a little menu will pop up and then click on 'Command Prompt (Admin)'. This produces a black window with white text. Type SFC /SCANNOW and pthen press the 'Enter' key. Note there is a space between SFC and the /S. Let the computer run until it has finished this, it may take 40 minutes or a bit longer but do NOT stop it in the middle !  Then re-boot.

Run Mini Toolbox again and see if there is any improvement, and post back.

You definitely have an update problem, Speccy shows no updates at all on this computer although they are set to automatic. That's enough to be going on with, updates and your wifi can be looked at later.

Chris, thanks for taking the time to assist me. I appreciate your prompt and thorough attention to detail.

Sadly I am unable to find either of the first two culprits you have identified. I opened programs from the control panel and looked thru the list. No mention of Microsoft Bing Sports. While there I looked for the Dell package "getting started with win 8.1" no dice on either.  So on to the next step I did not see revo on moms desktop so  evidently I must have uninstalled it between the scan with mini-toolbox and your response. So I downloaded and installed Revo and opened it up. The list of programs did not show either program. So I put each name separately in the search bar for revo and got nada.

I hate to admit this to the multitude of sharp individuals perusing these pages for pleasure and assistance but as we now know, I have little or no cormpruter expertise. And I thought I was so smart, shucks I need some 6 year old kid to take me by the hand and point out the obvious, I know they are here cuz I opened up mini again and checked all the boxes and ran it again and could see the reference to errors  you pointed out.

So here I sit with a frown wondering "What the Heck". Suggestions Please

Chris Restarted Ran SFC /SCANNOW restarted ran mini tool box log  follows and the zipped cbs log is attached. Aww heck just saw a reference to Bing Sports below, guess it is still hiding from me.  I still do not know what to do about the Dell package 'Getting started with Win 8.1' you want me to delete, that I am unable to find. I await your confirmation these tasks have been done correctly and further instructions. Thanks DaveAttached File  CBS.zip   134.14KB   1 downloads

A search shows that Bing Sports is a Win 8.1 app and very often these do not show up as 'installed programs' but I would still try to uninstall it. You will need to go to 'Tile' or 'Apps' view in Win 8.1 to do this.

If you are normally in desktop view tap the Windows key on the keyboard and this will switch you over to 'Tile' view. Scroll across the display until you find 'Bing sports' then RIGHT click on its tile and you should have the option to delete or remove it. Do so. Dell's 'Getting started' appears also to be an app so do the same with that. The problem here is that my wife's laptop runs 8.1 but I deleted all the apps I could when we first got it, 18 months ago, and I haven't any left to check this procedure on !

Your internet connection by ethernet seems to be working OK. Could you disconnect the ethernet, make sure the wifi on the computer is turned on - it doesn't matter if it fails to connect to the internet - and run MTB again please. This will give some idea of any problems with the wifi. When you disconnect the ethernet cable the wifi unit should switch itself on, but make sure it is switched on before you run the MTB. Or better still, turn the computer off, remove the ehternet cable and re-boot.

Post back, if it is a day or two - no problem. I get a notification when you post.

Thanks so much for your quick response. After a couple hours clicking n swiping n googlin till hells bells was a ringin and generally stumblin around I finally found the apps list. Who knew it was a simple click on start and look down  or up depending on the location of the start button n there they were. Sadly my right clicks have not produced an uninstall option nor a remove button but shucks tomorrow is another day and I will tackle this step when I no longer have a ball-pean hammer clenched firmly in my fully developed left hand. I don't actually want a drink, I simply need several, hopefully enuf to wipe the tears from my one good eye. Til I figure these steps you have laid out, I bid u anon.

turned laptop off unplugged the  Ethernet restarted  and then ran MTB the log follows. Just to let you know against your suggestions I ended my search to delete "Microsoft Bing sports" and "Dell getting started". As soon as my feeble brain can find the way to a removal tool that makes em magically disappear I will resume the trek to discard the offending apps.

Please don't discard me , I will do better with the next task.

I wouldn't dream of it !  This MTB report shows definitely that your wifi in this laptop is not working. There are two possible causes for this. One is that your wifi drivers are faulty/corrupted, the other is that the wireless unit itself has failed. The simplest and cheapest thing to do first is plug your ehternet cable back in !

Since this is a Dell, if you turn it over you should find a barcode label on the bottom of it - copy the number off the barcode label. Then go to the Dell web-site, Dell.com I think, and choose 'Support'. When you get there enter the number from the barcode label into the appropriate box and you will be taken to a support page for your exact model of computer. It's a great system, more manufacturers should adopt it. Then download the latest wireless drivers for your computer and save them in 'Downloads' or anywhere else that is convenient. What you are now going to do is uninstall your old drivers and install the new ones you have just downloaded.

Press the 'Win key' and 'X' together. This brings up a small menu, click on 'Control panel' and then 'System'. In the top left hand corner of the screen that 'System' brings up you will see 'Device Manager', click on this and it will open the device manager. Look down the list and your will see an entry 'Network adapters' probably with a '+' sign beside it, click on the '+' sign to expand this entry. You should now see an entry 'Dell wireless 1705 . . .'. Double click on this and you will get a gray panel pop-up. Choose 'Drivers' from the top of it and then 'Update driver'. Since you have already downloaded the new drivers choose 'Browse my computer' and navigate to where ever you put the drivers and choose the install file then click either 'Install' or OK' whichever comes up. Once it has finished installing them, disconnect your ethernet,  re-boot and see if the wifi is working. If it is - great, if it isn't . . .

Wifi units in laptops can fail, in which case the only economical solution is to buy a USB wireless dongle, essentially a wifi unit with a USB connector on the end of it. But, don't rush out and buy one just yet although they are not very expensive.

I am still concerned about the lack of updates on this computer, you should still get them even using an ethernet connection. Post back to let me know how you get on with the wifi drivers and if there are any signs of you being offered updates. If there are still no signs of updates - leave the computer on and connected to the internet for about an hour first - then I will see about getting a second opinion on this.

Chris thanks for your patience and assistance. I believe the drivers were downloaded and installed or at least it is connected to the internet, wireless, right now. So something magic happened. How I am not sure. I went to dell.com as instructed and put in the numbers on the bottom on the laptop. I searched for drivers and it found three that were needed. I think I downloaded and installed them all at one time, not sure. I could not find them in downloads so I am guessing they completed cause when I went back and scanned it did not find any drivers needed.

While there in dell.com there was an option to do a system scan full or quick scan. Tthinking that scan might find some problems and fix them, I tried both options. When I tried to run a full scan it kept  hanging up and returning an error that said to flush dns cache. I followed the instructions several times to flush but the error kept showing up so the scan never completed. Then I tried the quick scan option and it hung for an hour or so.

I  got impatient and so hunting around I went back to control panel and ran the trouble shooter on the wireless network adapter with the ethernet connected and then unplugged the Ethernet cable and then unplugged the network box itself, sorry I don't in this moment know the actual name but it is the main box that the ethernet cable come out of, so it reset itself. I shut down the laptop and voila I now have wireless connection. This worked last week for about an hour and then the wireless failed again. Here is hoping it stays this time. I know I am crazy hopping around from thing to thing, sorry to make this so complicated, my ADD is getting the best of me today.

I have not yet been offered updates so that is still an issue. I am gonna shut this thing down right after I hit post and see in a few if it connects back  wireless if I do not post with an "awww heck" I guess we proceed to the next part of this journey.

Well two rounds of shutdowns and had to reset the router after the first one. Back to connecting wireless. Gonna keep turning on and off a few more times to see if the wireless continues to work or fails again. No sign of updates yet.

Sounds like some slight progress is being made !

What is your use pattern with this computer ?  Do you switch it on to read or write a couple of emails or check something on-line then switch it off, or do you have it on for longer periods of use ?  The reason I ask is that updates can take a little while to download and if you only have the computer on for a few minutes at a time this is probably not allowing enough time. This could explain why, even though you have had a connection over ethernet, you have not downloaded any updates, ever. Your updates, according to speccy, are set to automatic so they should be downloading and installing.

Post back when you have a minute and let me know how the wifi is getting on.

Wifi is gone again. I signed in as administrator. I opened device manager, clicked on network adapters, right clicked on dell wireless, selected search online for software update, it has been searching for the last 16 minutes seemingly with no end in sight. Why is this wireless going in and out? Frustrating. It is now connecting wireless again. If I reset the router by unplugging and replugging it works wireless for a while.

Awww heck missed your main question. Hate to admit this but  the off buttons were set to put the computer to sleep not to shut down. I have corrected that and now it is shutting down. So This thing was on for quite some time. I did notice this morning it had reverted to the sleep option and not shutting down, so I reset the buttons and today it has been shut down several times and on for several hours at a time.

I tried the windows update search and it just kept the green bar moving for an hour, no options to download any updates. I got the installed updates to show and the last ones were dated 12.30.16. Security update for Microsoft windows kb (3205401) and update for microsoft wimdows ( kb 3210132), and a security update for adobe flash player. before that   214 updates have been installed since the laptop was first updated to total 217. So although on th windows update page it is telling me "most recent check for updates; never , updates were installed; never" that is not true.

When you go into Device manager you don't have to torture yourself tracking down drivers and drivers and downloads unless there is a yellow exclamation mark or a red 'x' against an item. Yellow means a problem, red means it is a serious problem.

I am delighted to hear that your updates appear to have been installed but the Speccy report you published right at the start of this thread doesn't show any. Have a look at this one which is from my desktop and consider that the build date on this computer was June 2016. You will find them in the OS section and headed 'Hot fixes' -

http://speccy.piriform.com/results/6chTYV215uUffRBnaGL2W2N

217 sounds about the right number for the age of your laptop. Since it may have been just a blip on your original Speccy report could you post another please ?

But I think it is time to get someone who knows more about networking to have a look at this, let me have the Speccy report and give me a couple of days.

It may not be the wifi nic in the pc at all and it's the router's wifi acting up. Try pulling the power plug out on the router for a few seconds.

technony thanks for the suggestion. I have done just that several times a day. Each time I reset the router by unplugging, the laptop will connect wirelessly, till the next time it does not connect wirelessly.

Then we just plug in the Ethernet cord but the idea of a laptop is portability. But mother doesn't want to sit in the room with the router. N mother is always right. Granted the router may be the issue.

At this point I think Chris is going to put me in touch with somebody to tend to the update errr lack of updating that has not been going on since 12.30.16 supposedly windows update is set to automatic but nada is happening.

At this moment I am down with some throat issues and not wanting to be around mom till I am less contagious. Us ole folks ain't as spry as we use ta be and a sniffle turns into pneumonia too easy.

It took all that to say "hey Chris, soon as I get well I'll get that speccy report online" oughta be a day or two. Thanks for the patience n understanding.
