Hi guys!

This comp has been used for several years as a server. Recently upgraded it with a decent GFX card and SSD. Started to get problems with "random" restarts but did not know the problem. Figured I'd just reinstall Win10 as i did today.

Now the restarts continue. Now this computer is beeing used used for a virtual cycling setup with ZWIFT. It seems the computer only freezes when using this program. It does use some CPU and GFX I guess but still I canæt figure out the problem.

I did run the MiniToolbox program you guys keep telleing ppl to use. Here is the log:

Hopefully some of you can give me a few hints.

As far as I have seen the "DbxSvc" is related to Dropbox, which I do have installed. But is it this that creates the errors?

Could this in ANY way be related to overheating of CPU? When I look at it my Q6600 has had a max temperature of 60 something.

Q6600 ~ 62.2°C (Stepping B3)

Q6600~ 71°C (Stepping G0)

If you wouldn't mind doing the following it could be useful in order for everyone to help you better.

https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/323892/publish-a-snapshot-using-speccy/

As for load testing if you want to try it do the following, run prime95 for 20 min and watch your temps with open hardware monitor , if you hit 85c stop the test as fast as is possible as well if you haven't had problems in the past and this is something new check for dust on your cooling system first before trying a cpu max load test.

http://www.mersenne.org/download/

http://openhardwaremonitor.org/

This is useful as well for a quick test but sadly the free version only let you run it for 15 min at a time.

https://www.passmark.com/products/bit.htm

Next in line thank you for letting us know what the last thing that changed before you had problems, do you know what your power supply is if so list it, the newer the video card often the more watts it needs to run, if the power supply can't keep up then it will turn it self off to protect it self or the system can become unstable, or it just explodes though mostly that only happens on cheap units.

As well a memory test might be in order, you only need to do one pass.

I think actually it might be the power of the PSU. Here is link to speccy http://speccy.piriform.com/results/6ozyCeisG1hompNAVMsSdvG

But after this I will open PC and see what PSU is inside. I'll get back to you in the afternoon. Thanks!

PS: As you can see. No crashes in the time I have not used the computer, it has only idled...

PPS: If you see anything else I should fix - please let me know :)

Ok so I had time to look at the PSU before I ran off to work this morning. The PSU I have installed is:

Chieftec 650W

Model: APS 650 C

The rest of the hardware you see in my speccyfile.

I am going to remove 1 of the 2 HD's and keep the SSD.

It would be no problem for me to test out my setup with a 800W PSU I have in another computer. From this do you think it could be that the PSU does not have enough power for my GPU?

Update: I found that this GPU needs:

Geforce GTX 660ti - 24A and a 450W PSU minimum

So should be enough, unless something is wrong with it.

I'm having issues where the system hangs when I log in.  I found your post because I'm seeing windows application error logs showing:

Certificate mismatch for file: C:\Program Files (x86)\Dropbox\Client_17.4.33\Dropbox.exe

Most likely unrelated.

Started to get problems with "random" restarts but did not know the problem

Seccy is saying 55c idle temp, it could be getting it wrong but all ready this is setting off alarm bells in my head, id check with open hardware monitor and see if you get the same numbers on this topic as well as check in the bios and see if your seeing the same numbers their too, if im right about this a prime95 run will just do whats all readying going on, the pc will power down in order to protect it self as well all the idle temps should all be the same regardless of what you use or were you check them within +/- 5%.

Normally i go down the list to take a good 10min look at speccy when someone posts but this time i didn't, the min i saw 55c i was like problem.

If this is a new problem that you didn't have in the past im really thinking its a case fan that died or just dust.

A wise test and one that would answer the psu problem topic quickly, im thinking at the moment though its not that though seeing as your 650watt should be able to do the job with the new video card after researching the the topic for that psu.

Usamsa the pro on the log file topic and i have no training when it comes to this topic and don't know how to read that stile of log file or what to look for.

Mostly im a hardware guy/overclocker/pc repair tech, and often i really need the pc under my noise to do what i do, its 10x harder to do what i do in a forum and as well im just checking the basics and if they don't turn up anything ill defer to usamsa skill from that point on.

As well you should start a new topic if your having problems.

Well I did go to the PC to take out the PSU (I had not read you answer yet). I had also done some manual calculation of Watt usage and I also thought it strange that my PSU could not handle it.

So I went to the CPU and wriggled a little bit at the CPU fan. And yeah RIGHT THERE, the fan was not 100% tight. One of the "knobs" connecting the fan to the MB was loose. I took it off and it had actually broken, making the Colling paste turn into mold.

This was not a stock fan so I picked up my stock fan and tried it with some new colling paste. Voila. My idle temp is now 38 degrees, and after 1 hour 30 minutes of spinning on my bike, I had no problems.

Thx for your help guys. I think I found the solution :)

Their we go, knew it was something like that.

Glad to hear things worked out.

Ps id still do max load testing but that's just me, and the stock Intel cooler is a piece of junk so at best its just a quick fix.....for now.....

Peace....

Damn. I am back. After the comp worked great the first time for 1h30 minutes it started crashing again. I really dont understand why.

I have done Windows memory test, I only watched the first pass it was no errors. Then I did the Prime95 test twice for about 20 minutes. That worked fine.

I did remove the system fan also, it was LOADED with dust, I removed dust and saw lower system temperatures. Today it crashed after 30 minutes. What I do while this is happening is:

1. Zwift virtual cycling

& on the other screen

2. Watching tv show via Plex server in my cellar.

The strange thing is that this comp USED to be my PLEX server earlier and it never crashed that I knew of.

So the only new additions is SSD disk and switched graphics cards. I also did reinstall a fresh version of Win 10.

Event Viewer errors I see is.

Event ID 320

10016

1001

1101

41

6008

69 (Several errors before the crash)

Running the missing Burning Test now, but seems to work fine...

The computer can run torrents all day long and only crashes it seems if i do stuff on it. Could there be any way in hell that my old D drive could be the trouble here? I am lost on this.

Can you follow these BSOD posting instructions so everyone can have a better look at your system? MiniToolBox reports you had a 0x00000116: VIDEO_TDR_ERROR bugcheck. According, to usasma's BSOD Index it seems to be that your graphics card is the problem. This makes sense as you upgraded your graphics card. Please download the latest drivers from your manufacturer's website, uninstall your current graphics drivers, reboot, them install the fresh copy you downloaded.

Confirmed! It is related to your NVIDIA graphics driver nvlddmkm.sys.

Here's the information from three of the loaded dumps:

Spoiler

Please:

:step1: Update Windows. You only have three hotfixes installed. Not good at all.
:step2: Check for BIOS updates. Your BIOS dates back from 2008 it's 9 years old!  I'm not sure whether if it can support Windows 10. (Do this ONLY if you know what you're doing. If your computer shuts down halfway through, you probably won't be able to boot again.)
:step3: Reinstall your graphics drivers as mentioned before and reboot.
:step4: Perform all of usasma's EXCELLENT hardware diagnostics.
:step5: When you're free, read this page from usasma's website:

Thanks for the answer! I will do as you suggest late today. Regarding you points sofar though:

1. I have installed all available updates, this Win10 install was from a clean Win 10 install. No more hotfixes available as I can see during Windows Update

2. There is a BIOS update, I have downloaded it, installed it to CD. The BIOS update starts and completes. However 2 blocks are not written too and no change is applied to the BIOS. I can not load Default settings from BIOS which is a prerequisite for the update according to EVGA site. Yes computer is OLD, I only use it for low end stuff to put it this way.

3-5. Will do later today

I will post back with any findings. Thx
