I'm getting this strange error in cmd.exe popout randomly.

KB3172605 and/or KB3161608 are installed in your system. Please uninstall KB3172605 and/or KB3161608 before installing this driver.

Is this a virus or botched windows update?  Thanks.

Unfortunately, your screen shot did not survive the trip.

However, a couple of things:

  • The error message definitely sounds suspicious as a spoof/fake; BUT
  • There *were* initially some Bluetooth issues with KB3172605 when it was first issued in July 2016 (as there had been with its predecessor, KB3161608)
  • Having said that, AFAIK there have been no recent issues with KB3172605 since it was reissued many months ago.
  • To the contrary, manual installation using the offline installer for KB3172605 and KB3020369 have -- for many, many, many Win7/SP1 users -- finally fixed the perpetual "checking for updates" issue that plagued us for many months. For example, see HERE and many, many topics here at BC, at sevenforums.com and elsewhere.

Are you trying to install some sort of Bluetooth driver, by any chance?

Perhaps you could upload your screen shot to imgur or to a similar, reputable, image-hosting service?

I suspect that the forum mods and experts will need to see a bit of basic system data in order to better help, such as a SPECCY report and perhap a MiniToolbox log.

EDIT: Alternatively, the mods may relocate this thread to the "Am I Infected" sub-forum, for a deeper look at the system.
