Win_64bit takes 20+ mins to boot

Hi Guys,

 

I have a Samsung i5, 6GB ram laptop running win 7, 64 bit.  For some while now (6 months) the boot up time to usable desktop has decayed to 20+ minutes.  A few points to add:

1. I don't know what caused the decay in the first case but it appears to get slower to boot as time goes on.

 

2. Takes approx 7-8 mins to logon screen

 

3. The rest of the time taken to get to desktop and for all background processes to complete what they are doing, so that I can open folders, browse the internet etc, without fighting with the pc.

 

4. I notice that if after the login page loads, I leave loging in for 10-15 mins, it goes very quickly to my desktop and I can open folders/files, browse the internet virtually straight away (oh...the good old days!)

 

5. I run ESET Smart Security and Malwarebytes Premimium and have the latest installations.  I have been running them both together since August last year, but in the last few days see that ESET no longer works.  I have gone through the whole 9yards of unistalling in safe mode etc.  This works again initally but then will not load gui (egui.exe not working) and neither is the ekrn.exe working.

 

6. Problems with ESET obviously prompted me to to look into getting this working because without an AV I am a sitting duck and only this morning lead me to looking into the events log after reading a post on this forum abouts events and how tthey can be used if having problems with the pc (as I have).  There are a huge number of errors and warnings, yestreday and even from today and this was straight after start up.  I see some of the errors and warnings are about ESET and how certain components have timed out.

 

Ok. so thats a bit of background that I hope will help someone that can help me sort/unravel this stuff.  I did create an events zip-up log file this morning which I have posted (Event Log-080117) and hope it will help.  If there is anything else I can provide information wise that will help solve this problem then please let me know.  Thanks in advance.

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.
 
Checkmark the following checkboxes:
  List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
  List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
 
Click Go and paste the content into your next post.
 
Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

   Go to Piriform's website, and download the free version on the left.  Click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version. You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.

    After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.
 
     Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course):

     Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot.

     Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard

Now, once you are back in the forum topic you are posting in, click the ADD REPLY or REPLY TO THIS TOPIC button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Add Reply below the Reply box.

What is Niche Pulse...why are so many versions installed?

 

No critical security updates for Win 7 are reflected as installed...rather odd for an install dating to Aug 2012.

Hey Louis,

 

Niche Pulse is software that I use.  I was aware that each version installed separately (don't know why the developer did it this way) and not on top of each other with just latest version showing.

 

Ok, so does that mean that the critical updataes have not been installed?  I know I went for about a year without updating windows as I had no notifications (and simply just forgot about this essential bit of maintenance).  Then Sept last year I was alerted to this by my Son and then spent a couple of days solid downloading and installing all previous missed updates.  I am up to date currently.

 

Any idea's where to now?  Thanks.

I can't tell you anything about the Windows critical updates/hotfixes...other than they are typically reflected by Speccy on a system where critical updates have been attempted or installed.  Your system reflects only two hotfixes that are not even related to Windows but are driver updates.  FWIW:  I would not use Windows Update for updating drivers...the best source for such, IMO, would be either the manufacturer of the component...or, if system is OEM, the website of the OEM manufacturer.

 

I also noticed that the inability to update...is not limited to Windows (see Application section of reported Event Viewer data).  IMO, that could be an indication of malware.

 

As to next step...I suggest opening a new topic in the Am I Infected forum here at BC...if only to remove the possibility that malware problems exist.  That's a worthy possible obstacle to remove from consideration.

Assuming I am not infected (I will do as you suggest) is there anything that can be done to get ESET running and the boot time down to any acpetable time?  If you are unable to help, do you know of anyone else that can help me get this sorted out?  Thanks.

Do you have Fast Startup enabled?

 

Press the Windows keywindowskey_zps092d5c75.png and the X key at the same time.  In the menu that opens select Control Panel, then select Power Options.  

 

In the upper left pane select Choose what power button do.

 

Click/tap on Change setting that are currently available.

 

Under Shut down Settings there should be a check in the Turn on fast startup (recommended) box to enable this feature.
