Over the last week or so when playing Words With Friends on Facebook, sometimes when the game is starting to run one of their usual ads, instead the entire FB page is replaced with a webpage for National Consumer Center.  I have googled and found that it is some sort of scam to get me to answer survey questions and possibly gain more access to my computer.

I am using Windows 10, which as an aside I will say I am not very happy with because I've had problems of various types with it,, but to stick to the topic here is what I have done to remove that bogus webpage.

First, I attempted to run my antivirus software, AVG.  AVG had several components that were not working so I deleted AVG and reinstalled it and ran a full computer scan.  That did not fix the problem.  A friend told me about ADWcleaner so I used that and it did find several things as shown here (I have deleted the line with my personal information in it):

After running this, the FB game ran more quickly and for a few hours I did not get the National Consumer Center webpage, but then it started happening again.

I am not good with technology so a friend of mine suggested I ask here at Bleeping Computer to see if anyone has any ideas about how to fix this problem.  Thank you so much for any help you can give me.

If it is the free version of AVG then you may have some of its adware installed, too.

Do you have an ad blocker installed in your browser(s)? If so...which one?

Use the programs below including a new scan using AdwCleaner to clean, remove adware and to remove malware.

Use CCleaner to remove Temporary files, program caches, cookies, logs, etc. Use the Default settings. No need to use the

Registry Cleaning Tool...risky. Pay close attention while installing and UNcheck offers of toolbars....especially Google.

After install, open CCleaner and run by clicking on the Run Cleaner button in the bottom right corner.

CCleaner - PC Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download

  • download Malwarebytes to your desktop.
  • Double-click mb3-setup-1878.1878-3.5.1.2522.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • Then click Finish.
  • Once the program has fully updated, select Scan Now on the Dashboard. Or select the Threat Scan from the Scan menu.
  • If another update of the definitions is available, it will be implemented before the rest of the scanning procedure.
  • When the scan is complete, make sure that all Threats are selected, and click Remove Selected.
  • Restart your computer when prompted to do so.
  • The Scan log is available throughout History ->Application logs. Please post it contents in your next reply.

Download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.

  • Close all open programs and internet browsers.
  • Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on Scan button.
  • When the scan has finished click on Clean button.
  • Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
  • Please post the contents of that logfile with your next reply.
  • You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.
  • download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
  • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
  • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
  • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
  • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
  • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
  • Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message

It is not the free version of AVG.

I am unsure if I have an ad blocker.  I "assumed" the AVG had one, but I don't know.

I will attempt to follow your instructions.  I'm not very good at this sort of thing, but will do my best!  Thank you very much and I'll let you know the results.

Your first scan using AdwCleaner remove one adware item from AVG.

[-] [C:\Users\deleted for privacy\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Web data] [Search Provider] Deleted: isearch.avg.com

After running the scans above and posting the results....do this:

Install this ad blocker in Chrome.....Adblock Plus - Chrome Web Store

Once it is installed click on the ABP icon and choose Filter Preferences. Uncheck the box next to Allow some non-intrusive advertisements.

Block Third Party Cookies, which are ad/ tracking cookies, from installing. Once they are blocked run CCleaner to remove the existing ones.

Ok, CCcleaner done.   Malwarebytes done, but I don't know where to find the scan log.  I can tell you that Malwarebytes found nothing to remove.   So moving on to your next step, I do already have adwcleaner installed so I will run it.

In reading your instructions re Junkware Removal, you say to shut down my protection software.  I don't know how to do that, and if I do figure it out, how do I start it up again?  I'll wait on the Junkware process till hearing from you about that.  Remember, I'm an old lady who is not computer savvy.

I installed the adblocker but can't find an icon for it on my taskbar or desktop.  Searched thru Cortana but "she" shows nothing on my computer named that, and just gives suggestions for websites.  Got any suggestions for me on that?

I really do appreciate all your help and intend to follow all your instructions in the order given.

After some thought and perusing, I discovered the ABP icon up at the top of my Chrome pages, and did as you said.   Now I'm going to try blocking the third party cookies.

Ok, got the third party cookies blocked.  Whew!  I feel like I've been through the wringer.   Thank you so much for your help.  I am now going back to Facebook to test it all!

I didn't get any ads at all yet on my FB Words with Friends game, so I'm hopeful that everything you've told me to do has done the trick.  Thank you again so very much.
