Hi, this is my first time here and I'm not computer security expert so please be patient with me. Here's my situation:

The computer I use at home (Windows XP) has become infested with many viruses and spyware (I suspect my sibling was doing something stupid). I know the names of some of the spywares/viruses but I don't really know where to start. If someone could help me through the process of getting the right software (preferably free) and the right process of getting rid of all this junk, it would be most appreciated. One thing that I have is Norton but it doesn't seem to do much except tell me that there are viruses. One being called "Spyware Quake". Help me out please.

Hello dudeman6788

What type of anti-virus are you using and when was the last time you ran a scan? Have you performed any anti-spyware scans? If not, start here:

If your running Win XP/2000, download and scan with Ewido Anti-Spyware v4.0 in "SAFE MODE".
Print out the Ewido Install and Scan Instructions.

Download and scan with Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06. Setup & Configure as shown here.
Download and scan with Spybot S&D 1.4. Setup & Configure as shown here.
[DO NOT choose the option to install TeaTimer]
Note: If you encounter any error messages while downloading the updates, manually download them from here.

See BC's List of Virus & Malware Resources.
See BC's Freeware Replacements For Common Commercial Apps.

We also have a self-help section for removing common malware. Please see the self-help tutorial How to remove SpywareQuake and SpyQuake2.com.

If your unsure about doing this by yourself, then please read and follow all instructions in the pinned topic titled "Preparation Guide For Use Before Posting A Hijackthis Log". When you have done that, post a log in the HijackThis Logs and Analysis Forum, not here, for assistance by the HJT Team Experts.

Start a new topic, give it a relevant title and post your log along with a brief description of your problem, a summary of any anti-malware tools you have used and a summary of any steps that you have performed on your own. Please include the top portion of the HijackThis log that lists version information. An expert will analyze your log and reply with instructions advising you what to fix.

It may take a while to get a response because the HJT Team members are very busy working logs posted before yours. Please be patient. They are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. Once you have made your post and are waiting, please DO NOT make another reply until it has been responded to by a member of the HJT Team. Generally the staff checks the forum for postings that have no replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response, a team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another HJT Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond.

Sorry I'm replying so late. I just scanned with the Ewido Anti-Spyware Software. What am I supposed to do with the scan report that I saved? I'm continuing what you told me to do after the Ewido scan.

To answer your questions:
I just had Norton Antivirus (The most recent scan, other than the one I just did, was a day before my first post)

Ok, I've done some scans and stuff with some of the programs but some of the things that I'm having problems getting rid of are:

- Trojan Horse (Vundo.Gen, In my sys32 folder)
- WinFixer2006 (I don't know what it is or how to get rid of it)

Also, random popups come up and I don't really know what spyware/adware its coming from.

The latest scans I did were on the Ewido program (is there a permanent free program?) on sept. 2nd. I don't know what I'm supposed to do with the scans. I also have an Ad-Aware scan from the same day. Right now I'm using anti-virus software from the list of free commercial programs. Thanks again for the help, but I still need guidance on what needs to be done to clean up my computer.

Did you get rid of Spyware Quake?

It sounds like you have multiple infections. Please follow the instructions I previously gave you for posting a hijackthis log. When you have done that, post a log in the HijackThis Logs and Analysis Forum, not here, for assistance by the HJT Team Experts.
