All my desktops have Win XP. I received a Win 7 laptop from a friend at my computer club, and it had been given to her by a 3rd party when he upgraded, and it was free.  Free is good. When I tried to install updates, I received a message that the key was generic, which I presume means illegal, and I couldn't update.  The OS has had no updates since 2011, and I took it off my network immediately. This was about a week ago.

I just started it up again and now all the programs and folders have locked up  The product key is on a legit MS label on the bottom, but it's a Vista key. How do I find out if it's indeed an illegal copy, or if MS is mistaken? Yes, I know, MS never makes mistakes.  Should I PM you the key?
