GTX 1070 - Computer Crashing While Gaming

Hello there, I have been having some frustrating issues with my computer after purchasing and installing the GTX 1070 and AMD FX-8350. I upgraded without changing my MOBO or anything else, just the GPU and CPU.

 

My current setup:

 

OS: Windows 10 - 64 bit

MOBO: ASRock 970 Extreme4

GPU: GTX 1070

CPU: AMD FX-8350

SSD: OCZ Vector 150 + HDD for media files

RAM: 12 GB DDR3 G.Skill Ripjaw

Monitor: GSYNC Dell S2417DG

2nd Monitor: Hanns G 1080p 60 hz monitor

 

I have tried playing Overwatch, CS:GO and Deus Ex: MD and all have crashed my PC within a minute tops of starting the game (but doesn't crash in menus). The PC has not crashed once during regular, non-gaming use, and has also not crashed whilst using the Dolphin Gamecube emulator to play Super Smash Brother: Melee.

At first, I thought the issue could be my 500W PSU, it is about 4 years old and on the low end of what you should have for this setup but. I assumed it was fine at first but I replaced it with a 600W PSU anway. Same problem after installing new power supply.

 

I also thought they something might be overheating but after using several hardware monitoring programs, nothing went above 55 C.

Then I thought it could be a driver issue and/or weird windows issues (since I didn't reinstall windows after CPU swap), so I did a clean install of Windows 10 84 bit into a brand new PNY 240 GB SSD. I installed all the current GTX 1070 drivers, updated windows, check that all components were detected properly, still crashed right away when I started Deus Ex.

 

Some extra details:

My motherboard is PCIe 2.0 (not 3.0 like is standard with the GTX 1070)

 

The CPU/GPU I had previously were:

GPU: Radeon HD 5770

CPU: AMD Phenom II BLACK X4 945

 

I ran Memtest86 on my RAM, no errors detected after 3 passes

 

I have some freezing issues about once or twice every few hours for about 45 seconds. My CPU usage spikes (sometimes up to 100%) during these freezes. This happened more severely with the past CPU than the new FX-8350. When I had the older components, this freezing never happened during gaming, but only during normal use, sometimes it seemed triggered by many tabs being opened in chrome.

The computer wont turn on immediately after crashing. I have to flip the powerswitch in the PSU off, until the white light on the GTC 1070 goes off, then flip PSU back on, then the PC will boot up normal.

 

 

I am stuck at what I should do and before YOU GOT AN AMD CPU NOW ?!?! , I got it for $70 and I didn't have to worry about replacing my MOBO. I didn't think another ~$300 would be worth the extra performance of the 8350.

My thoughts on what could be going on are:

  1. Motherboard is messed up/causing problems
  2. GPU and/or CPU have problem

 

 

What is the best way to figure this out from here ?

I'd greatly appreciate any input, thanks !!

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.
 
Checkmark the following checkboxes:
  List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
  List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
 
Click Go and paste the content into your next post.
 
Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

   Go to Piriform's website, and download the free version on the left.  Click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version. You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.

    After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.
 
     Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course):

     Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot.

     Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard

Now, once you are back in the forum topic you are posting in, click the ADD REPLY or REPLY TO THIS TOPIC button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Add Reply below the Reply box.

Potenially several things to think about. FX 8350 draws a bit more power than an X4 945. GTX 1070 draws more power than the HD 5770. I would make sure the motherboard bios is the lastest since the GTX 1070 is relatelively new and your mainboard isn't so new. You didn't mention a power supply but that could potentially come into play. Also if you merely upgraded to the new GPU/CPU but you didn't do a fresh operating system installation I would recommend that and I sort of covered that in a recent thread where in the scenario where one does not do this, that uninstalling previous GPU drivers (in your case likely older AMD drivers for the HD 5770) and running DDU to get rid of any remnants and again installing fresh nVidia drivers. Not sure if these condition apply to you since you didn't mention them.

 

Check-------------

 

1. bios version

 

2. power supply (how old and what is the brand model?)

 

3. O/S install was is fresh or you just did the upgrade with the existing windows installation?

 

*A few other things to check out to rule out any parts that could be bad. bad processor is rare, really rare, but errant install isn't so rare. There is a possibility of a bent, slightly bent, or errant seating of the FX 8350 on the socket. Examination with a cell with the camera on mag x5 will tell you that. You can also try reseating the graphics card and making sure that the GPU power socket is getting proper power from your power supply. Next thing I would do is try the GTX 1070 in another system if a friends has one that he would allow such a test etc.

Seccy link dousen't work, and id hole off on the full reinstall for now, and zone is right PSU is what ?

 

I also thought they something might be overheating but after using several hardware monitoring programs, nothing went above 55 C.

 

So this is with prime95 15min burn in and loaded cpu temps ?

I'm running it with one 120 mm fan and 3 90 mm fans 
 
I have the stock cooler on the 8350 
 
 
I ran Memtest86, no errors after 4 passes and 6 hours, needed to use computer for work 
 
I ran Prime95 in CPU isolation mode, never broke 60 after ~30 minutes running it
 
I ran UNIGINE Valley Benchmark at Ultra, GPU temp climbed up toward 60 C and crashed right before it got there. CPU temp was around 45 
 
I updated MOBO bios, GPU bios from manufacturer site
 
The power supply I am using is the EVGA 110­BQ­0600­K1 600W Power Supply: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817438100
 
fresh install of windows 10 on new SSD, all NVIDIA drivers updated 
 
I put 2 x 2 GB in blue channels, 2 x 4 GB (different clock speeds) in white channels, both duos solo
 
Still crashing

Well i hope you didn't push past 60c on your cpu, guess what that's the limit on that cpu and its 125TDP at stock speed.

 

My self id say what i all ways do on this topic, setup bios in safe mode if you know what i mean and drop the speed on the GPU CPU by like 50% as well as loosen memory timings, in a nut shell put the system in to safe mode and use it for a wile and see if that fix things, more then that i might try different Os versions and see what happens, remember win10 us a beta Os.

 

Do you know how to work a bios ?

 

In a nut shell when i see too mouch of this topic on any computer i put the hole system in to safe mode on a hardware and software level then go for a test drive and see what happens.

 

As well the pros in this forum that like to look at logs might be able to pick up on something, i don't do that kind of thing my self.

They might be able to help you in ways i can't.

I would uninstall the CAM software...then run the chkdsk /r and sfc /scannow commands...and see how system performs.

Hemmm then i wouldn't want to advise you on how to work your bios then in a forum, to work a bios takes a lot of time and research as well as a high level of understanding.

 

And its not that i couldn't tell you what to change in their but one mistake and you can damage hardware and bomb your windows install, that limits what i can do in a lot of ways, i can tell you this much though if you can find the settings for your front side bus and chop the speed in two "-50%" and do the same for your ram speed that would be decent just for testing as well as the same with the video card cpu/ram.

 

One test you can do as well that should be safer is if you up for win7 sp1 on your SSD drive with only trusted drivers and see if that fix things, or you can re-post your topic in the BSOD part of the forum, this part of the forum has pros that are use to looking at log files and might turn something up, could take a wile though before you see the end of it.

Don't like heat my self and the old games your trying to play shouldn't get all cores going but from this vid one heat sink "after market" the cpu doesn't push past 40c with the AMD stock cooler its all most 60c and 60c the limit for your cpu.

 

My self id replace the cooler with a EVO 212or better just because my self i don't like heat and im all ways like that on this topic.

Are you saying that you have two differnt memory kits and are running them at the same time? or that you also tried to isolate the issue by running each kit just by itself to test? Just to clarify. If you haven't tried each matched kit separately do that because you want to void mixing different kits with different specifications, cas latency, timings, etc that can definitely give you a BSOD among other issues. You want all your memory to be one matched kit, or can be two kits matched exactly as well.

I put 2 x 2 GB in blue channels, 2 x 4 GB (different clock speeds) in white channels, both duos solo

 

Didn't pick up on the memory topic, if true then ya match kits or manual memory settings, my setup i don't have matched ram on this setup, and i have no problems in dual channel, at the same time i did my ram settings by hand like i all ways do and my other main computer that i had for years a amd k7 cpu system was miss matched dual channel ram on the same topic, and same deal, manual settings only for ram.

 

Dropping the speed on the ram by 50% and slacking the timings would have fixed and picked up on that problem, and memtest doesn't all ways pick up on all problems.

 

So agreed with Zone change your bios ram settings or go with only match ram kit and see what happens.

 

Speccy link still doesn't work....
