Computer running very slow and Windows 7 will not update

I posted earlier on the BSOD forum about an issue I am having.  I guess that was the wrong forum.  But I was concerned that my computer was going to crash and not be able to restart.

Can some one assist me?  Thank you,

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.
 
Checkmark the following checkboxes:
  List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
  List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
 
Click Go and paste the content into your next post.
 
Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

   Go to Piriform's website, and download the free version on the left.  Click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version. You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.

    After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.
 
     Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course):

     Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot.

     Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard

Now, once you are back in the forum topic you are posting in, click the ADD REPLY or REPLY TO THIS TOPIC button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Add Reply below the Reply box.

Go to Services...scroll down to Windows Update...STOP it, reboot.

 

You seem to be missing a number of critical updates...over a long period of time.

 

You have 1 svchost process using 1.15GB of RAM, with only 2GB installed.  I guess that would slow the system down.

 

I would also run the chkdsk /r command and follow that with the sfc /scannow command.

I stopped Windows update and rebooted.  I then tried to run chkdsk/r from the cmd.exe utility but it told me I didn't have privileges and I forget how to run this as an administrator.  So I'm stuck again.

I don't want to run Windows update again because I'm afraid it will lock up like it did the last time I tried.

 

Figured that out on my own BUT, now I'm being told that "Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process.  Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts?"

 

Wow.  Really?

 

sfc/ scannow is in progress.

Running sfc /scannow.  It is currently about 7% done with the verification process.  At this rate it might be done by  8 pm or so :-((

 

 

 

Result of sfc /scannow:  Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

 

chkdsk /r seemed to run OK also.

This computer seems a bit better.  Especially for the first few minutes after a restart.  But it's still not right.  Should I try Windows update again?

Well I tried to do Windows update again and got the same result.  It just hangs.  And it is still VERY slow.  Before it was not usable.  Now it is somewhat better but still very slow to load programs, and I even have to wait on key strokes sometimes.

Note to the OP:

It looks more complicated than it is.  I have merely broken it down to small steps.  The whole thing ought to take no more than 5-10 minutes, with a couple of reboots.

 

Also, for the record, MS eventually came around to publishing its own KB article (3200747) using the "fix" that had been devised by home users, months earlier.

Ok I had a problem.  When I disable Windows update and tried to restart my computer, my network adapter stopped working.  Something about "code 10"  I had to do a system restore to get it back.  I had also tried to down load that first kernel before that and it locked up and would not down load.  Man this is getting ugly.

However, some users have found that it works better to set the WU service to *Manual*, rather than to disable it, as explained in step #3 in the post linked here:

Having said that, the problems you're having and the error codes you're seeing suggest that something more serious might be going on with your system.

The tutorial described works (best) on an otherwise stable OS.

Computer is back to being unusable. I can't even change update status to "never check for updates "
I want to reinstall Windows 7 but I didn't get the disks when I traded. Is a reinstall still possible?
