Hi guys, quick question.

I have a HP pavilion desktop. Got it brand new. Had some dramas with it crashing. Don't know whether it was hacked or just malware from surfing the web. But what ever it was it killed the hard drive. Computer was under warranty so HP sent a technician out to my house and replaced the hard drive. But the strange thing was that the serial number displayed on the back of the computer was different to the serial number that was shown when in recovery mode. At the time I was talking to hp on the phone when he asked for my serial number. So I read him the serial number that was displayed in recovery mode on my screen. After I gave him the number he asked if I were 1 of 3 different people that was already registered under that serial number I gave him. I wasn't any of the 3 names. I asked y are there was any seeing though the computer was brand new? I asked is this a refurbished computer,? He said no way we don't do that. He found it very strange. Anyway he said we will send out the it specialist to fix it for you. I never noticed the different serial numbers until I got off the phone with hp guy. So when the IT man came I showed him the different serial numbers and he claims that there could have been someone remotely controlling my computer and they did changes to it. As well ad listing 3 unusual names to my computer so it covered there tracks in what ever they were planning to do whilst using it. So I'm just looking for an answer whether the serial number should be the same or does it change when device is in recovery mode. But still y did it have 3 people registered to a brand new computer? Can anyone shed some advice on this topic for me please. Any help or ideas will be muchly appreciated.

Cheers
Jarrod.

What do you think of the whole situation? Could The theory the IT specialist said be correct?

I'd do what Opera said.

Where did you buy the PC from?

I bought the computer through " make it mine " which delt with HP directly from what they tell me. Also the person I spoke to at hp said they don't give out refurbished computers it's against there policy. I did have someone that had access to my computer at one stage. But it's got me stuffed if that person would register 3 names under my computer. Someone said the serial numbers are different from the one on the back and the one that's displayed on the screen in recovery mode. Is that true?

Cheers j

I'm going to check them, what country did you buy it in?

I have a feeling that they may have sold you a refurb with a Serial number taken from a new model to keep it in warranty.
