I bought an HP 15-af131dx laptop at the beginning of this year.  It uses Windows 10 and has been incredibly slow from the day I received it.  It takes forever to boot up and do anything else, whether it's opening a browser or a word document.  It's very frustrating.  Any help to speed things up would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

How does the computer run in Safe Mode? Press the shift key and select Restart Computer. After reboot Select Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Startup Settings > Safe Mode with Networking.

See option 2

It runs slow in safe mode, however, I was not able to access the internet while in safe mode with networking.

If its been a year with this issue , i would of returned it earlier for a repair or replacement { Check your Warranty }.

Specs look ok for this unit , so either back everything up / docs / photos / etc and restore to Factory Default.

Possible issues could be HDrive or Memory , but if a Recovery install goes fairly quick you may be ok.
