Hey all, I've just signed up after running into a rather frustrating technical issue and stumbling across this site. Having very few spare components and a limited budget has made troubleshooting difficult, so it is my hope that somebody here can shed some light on this or at least point me in the right direction.

In short, my desktop PC is crashing (entire board powers down and does not automatically reboot, but will allow me to power back on instantly) when it gets put under load. Temp. readings, voltages and hardware aren't giving me anything to go by however, and I have cleaned / reconnected / reseated / regreased everything that I can think of, including disassembling the PSU and cleaning maticulously.

The only feedback Windows 7 has been giving me via eventvwr.exe is "6008", which generally reflects a thermal event I believe. Temperatures seem fine however, with the CPU maxing at around 66 degrees (celcius), GPU maxing at 77 degrees and the board temps maxing in the sub 50s. Fans are kept lubricated and are all functional, RAM has been reseated, tested, isolated etc, as has every other thing I can think of. I have not been able to replicate the crash in Safe Mode, nor using the plug & play legacy drivers with the card (am I correct in assuming that the GPU is basically not utilized when the correct drivers aren't there?), but I am able to replicate it when booting into Windows XP (with latest AMD drivers) and with any of the numerous versions of the AMD driver in Win7.

The other thing I find unusual about this is that it's a little random despite only occuring when under load. I am able to run Furmark for close to an hour sometimes before it'll crash, while other times it'll crash before even bringing me to the Windows login screen. Just now I once again resat the heatsink to the GPU with a tight fasten and it's being a lot more tolerant,  still crashing with intensive video applications but it will happen long after the sensor updates and shows me that "77".

My specs are as follows (the rig is very dated but the board shows no signs of shorts or leaky caps):
Board:            GA-EP45-DS3
CPU:            Intel Core2 Duo E8400 @ 3.00GHz 2.67GHz
GPU:            AMD Radeon HD 6950 (Gigabye)
PSU:            CoolerMaster 850W RS-850-ESBA
RAM:            4 x 1GB Kingston KVR800D2N5K202G @ 1.8v
System:            Windows 7 Ultimate Service Pack 1
HWMonitor readings:    http://puu.sh/sYN7C/8752681209.png

Many thanks in advance, I'm sure you all understand how frustrating it is to have such little to go on.

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

Go to Piriform's website, and download the free version on the left.  Click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version. You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.

After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.

Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course):

post-33068-0-86653600-1480692866_thumb.j

Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot.

Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard

Now, once you are back in the forum topic you are posting in, click the ADD REPLY or REPLY TO THIS TOPIC button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Add Reply below the Reply box.

Thank you Louis, I'm currently unable to get past login running normally so I am posting these results via safe mode. Would it also be helpful to post results when booting from a Windows XP HDD (the problem also occurs in that OS)?

Speccy snapshot is: http://speccy.piriform.com/results/GImR8Px3WtOtGZWpv1dP7md

My MTB dump is as follows (many of the installed programs are game titles via the Steam platform):

Btw i have all most the same cpu as yours and i don't like your temps, i have two cpus really ones a e5200 other ones a e6600, same cpus as yours only less level2 cash ram, they overclock like mad though.

Good chips and cheap too, wouldn't mind a e8400 that's more or less top of the line 775 cpu for a twin core and i could get one used for like $20, though i should probably get a top of the line 775 quad.

Temp limit for your cpu is 72c and your only 6c from the limit, with my cooling setup and im over volting and overclocking piles i hardly get past 50c, as well i just like to say nice work so far seems you know what your doing.

What did you say your cpu cooler was and how are you testing loaded temps for your cpu ?

What apps you using for testing ?

Stock TDP for the cpu is only 65 so really i don't see why your hitting 65c unless you have that useless stock intel cooler.

Not liking your temps all the way around btw, from my research the GPU on your video card can take like 90C, don't know about your chip-set temps i would have to do more research on the topic but my self anytime something starts pushing past 60c i dont like it.

Hey thanks man, I appreciate you taking the time as well :)  Definitely great little processors, grabbed this one a fair while back and it's just about kept up with all the daily tasks up until now haha.

You know, I hadn't even really considered the CPU up until now. When I first cleaned the case out though the mounting pins for the conical fan cooler on it DID snap (plastic push-pin system and Aussie summers) so I replaced it with a stock intel cooler from another machine lying around. This was before I'd really monitored anything and assumed it'd be a simple dust issue so I didn't have a reference temp but it does seem awfully close if the safe limit is 70. Wouldn't be surprised if there were some slight inaccuracies in the sensor / reading either.

So stock intel cooler from a Pavilion or something similar, and reading temps with HWMonitor (speedfan prior but I will try a few different ones out now to get a bit more info, BIOS too if mine does read the temp). Feeling a little bit of hope as I consider how bad the cooler really is, but the thing that confuses me is that I can run Prime95 in safe mode for example and not have issues. The programs report the CPU load being at 100% and temp at 66 (in safe mode too), but whether or not the CPU is truly allowed to hit its limit in that environment is another story. For a while I thought  that only graphically intensive applications were crashing it tbh, but opening firefox to a blank page (from a completely cold start) will do it sometimes, and that doesn't seem like it would put a whole lot of strain on the GPU.

My other big suspicion is the PSU after reading about voltage ripple and aging capacitors etc, haven't been able to test much in that respect due to the local store here closing quite early for christmas but tbh it's far more satisfying to find a solution this way anyway :P  Going to do some temp tests with other sources next and read a bit about the chip / other experiences with it but I'm definitely becoming a little concerned about it too.

First thing I would address:  insufficient free space on C:.  Generally speaking, the reommended maxim is 15% of total space on the C: partition.  You are far short of that.

Ahh yes good call, so the free space should be upwards of around 150GB then?  Cleared some room and about to look into CPU temps a little more but it may be worth noting that the system has just crashed under Safe Mode for the first time (while browsing in a large folder with many .avi and .mkv files).  It would seem that it's becoming more volatile as time passes.

I won't say that it should be 150GB...but I always leave at least 50 GB or so on large hard drives...the approximate same amount of free space I would expect to have/find on a clean install of Win 7.

I'd start with a power supply.  The hard crashes with unable to restart clues the PS as the fault.

A lot of what I've read based on similar symptoms does seem to imply that the PSU is at fault to be honest, and given the age / reputation of this particular one I'm pretty confident to be upgrading it regardless. Was honestly about to check the capacitors within but after doing some research I'm not really confident in safely discharging it anyway.

After suspecting and doing some extensive stress testing on the CPU I'm pretty confident that it alone isn't the culprit, so it might be time to order a new PSU and grab a multimeter for the sake of personal interest. The guy at the local store told me that based on the symptoms I described it was more likely to be the GPU failing, is there anything I can do to investigate or eliminate this factor?

https://www.raymond.cc/blog/having-problems-with-video-card-stress-test-its-memory/

And a round a just normal video card benchmarking apps too, as all ways check your heat levels and for any glitch & artifacting on screen when doing benchmarks, remember max heat on for your video card is like 90c.

Ps anyone running on a stock Intel cooler theirs really nothing more to think about.

Hey all, just an update for anyone who may be interested.

The main two suspects were initally the PSU itself and the CPU cooler, so I have replaced these (with a PS-ST1000-PT and a DeepCool Gammax 400) but without any success

With the new cooler and a new thermal compound I've been able to get the CPU temp range between 32 and 56 and the GPU temp between 52 and72 (GPU idle is quite high but so is the ambient here, does not seem to correlate with the crases at all). The GPU memory test is definitely a good idea, will give that a shot and run memtest again for good measure

I will scan the HDD when I get a chance dc3 thank you, in truth the drive is likely close to failing but I've had the exact same problems while booting from other HDDs with other operating systems and other driver configs so I'm definitely still leaning towards a hardware issue.

Could do a full clean on all parts as well on that system with electronic contact cleaner "or zippo fuel" and reseat everything a feu times and see what happens.

with the CPU maxing at around 66 degrees

Was that with a full load test for like 15min or more ?

E8400 cpu isn't new anymore and extended use at high temp can brake a cpu given time, good news is you can replace the chip for like $10 lol

by the way you over clock that thing any ?

Please run the SeaTools scan.

In your first post you stated that the problem didn't replicate itself in Safe Mode.  This could be a driver causing this.  To determine if this is the case I would like you to perform a Clean Boot.  Once you have configured it for a Clean Boot leave it this way for at least a day to see if the problem persists.  If it doesn't thee is a process of elimination which can be used to determine who the culprit is.

How to perform a Clean Boot

Warning:  Disabling items in Services or Startup may leave your anitivius disabled until the process is ended.  For this reason I would suggest that you perform this process off line.

1.  Click on the Start orb rsz_1rsz_1rsz_start_orb_zpshjewtibd.png, then type msconfig.exe in the Search programs and files box.

2.  When msconfig is seen in the pane above the search box and under Programs, right click on it, then click on Run as administrator.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, you should enter the password or provide confirmation.

3.  Click on the General tab.

4.  Click the Selective startup option.

5.  Remove the check mark in the Load startup items  check box.

6.Click on the Services tab.

7.  Place a check mark in the Hide all Microsoft services check box, this will remove the Microsoft Services from the list but will still be running.

8.  Click Disable all, this will remove all of the check marks in the Services list.

9.  Click on Hide all Microsoft services.  Click on Apply then OK

clean%20boot%202_zpsekds879g.png

Click on Restart in the window that opens.

When the computer is restarted it will boot normally.

Let me know if the problem persists after restarting the computer.

If the problem does not continue after the restart please do the following.

10.  Devide the number of these services by two and you place checks in the first half of these, then restart
the computer.

11.  If the problem doesn't return in those services remove the checks and place checks in the remaining
services.

12.  When you find which half the service is in go on to the next step.

13.  In the half that the problem came back in you should remove the checks from the first half or the
services.

14.  Restart the computer.  If it isn't in the first half of these services, do the same with the last half of the
services.

15.  Once you have narrowed it down to the last three or four services remove the checks one at a time till
you find the service at fault.

Once you have found the service post it in your topic.  Do not take any action until I suggest the next step.
