I bough a new monitor that has a split screen but I'm not sure what the difference is between the split screen and just going to the task bar and clicking on show side by side?

Most likely the monitor can split the screen using different inputs, so you could hook up two devices and see the screen on half, kind of like Picture in Picture for televisions.  This would be different than using the task bar since it would be unable to use the the input from another device like the monitor is able.
