Hi,

I have a Lenovo U31-70 laptop and about a month ago I took out its 1tb HD and fitted a 480gb SSD, this went fine.

however I used the recovery system to create a fresh install of Win 8.1 but since that time I have a problem, it will not get any updates at all.

I have been fighting with this close to a month now and still, ZERO updates have downloaded, it just says "searching for updates installed on this computer" and then nothing happens, I even left it on for 12 (twelve!!!) hours straight one day and still, nothing found and I had to kill the task.

Each time I use the PC, my cpu usage spikes and the fan speeds up as 'windows update' is eating cpu but seemingly doing nothing.

I'm now at my wits end and scared to use the laptop online because its like missing 2 years of security updates.

is there ANY way to fix this issue?   or have Microsoft turned off updates for 8.1?

hello mene

microsoft still updates windows 8.1 so that should not be the issue here :)

take a look at this link and try running the windows 8.1 / 8 / 7 fixit tool to see if that solves your problem
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/971058

let us know how it goes

hth!

I would recommend you do the following. It may or may not work.

Download the Servicing Stack for July 2016

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3173424

If that does not solve the update problem then try the following.

Download and install the July 2016 rollup but you will need to install the following prerequisites.

Reboot and try checking for Updates.

sometimes it takes a while to rebuild the list of updates after a reset. let it run for an hour more.

if that doesnt work johnc's advice is an excellent next step :)

hth!

Thank you very very much!!

I had almost tried all the steps without success then I installed the july 2016 rollup and BLAM!! updates were there.  178 of them lol!

I'm downloading and installing them 10-20 at a time right now.

Thank you, this had been driving me crazy for a month!
