Hi. Since about two weeks my PC is running into BSOD at boot time. Seemingly, there's something wrong related to the video card, as the only way to use it is to run the PC in VGA mode. The problem has showed up out of the blue, a day that I was restarting the system from hibernation. I got a blank screen that didn't go away, and forced me to hard reset the system. After that, I can't go further than the Window logo screen when using my regular AMD FirePro M5950 Mobility Pro Graphics driver.

I checked the PC with chkdsk and sfc, and checked for viruses -- no evidence of something wrong. Also, I updated all drivers but this didn't change anything,

I attach the files needed for the BSOD analysis.

I run a Win7 64bit (OEM) on a laptop Dell Precision M4600. Never changed my OS or reinstalled it. CPU is Intel Core i7-2920XM and the system is now 4 year old.
An additional point: minidump files are generated in a strange location. Instead of going to windows\minidump they are found into C:\Windows\LiveKernelReports\WATCHDOG. I attach the last one, along with the perfmon report and the sysnativefilecollection zip file (that I had to zip by myself as the app stuck on "waiting for sysinfo" not going anywhere).
Any help will be a tremendous Christmas gift!
Regards
Dario

Watchdog memory dumps are a bit different from the regular minidumps.
But, as you've found STOP 0x116 errors - please start with this procedure:  http://www.carrona.org/VideoTDR.html

Problems with NTRU Cryptosystems\NTRU TCG Software Stack , Acrobat Reader Update Service, and your ZAM drivers in the perfmon report.

Please uninstall them.  If needed, please download and install the latest, W7 compatible versions AFTER we are done troubleshooting.

Although you appear to have a reasonable number of Windows Update hotfixes for this version of your OS, please double check for any new Windows Updates.  It only takes one update to cause a problem, so it's essential that you have all of them.  The actual number is not important.  Rather it's important that you checked manually, installed any available updates, and didn't experience any errors when checking or updating.

Please only run one antivirus and one firewall at a time.
If you run more, you stand the chance of causing conflicts, system errors, and even could let malware onto your system

Please update these older drivers.  Links are provided in order to assist you with looking up the source of the drivers.  If unable to find an update, please uninstall the program that is responsible for that driver.  DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable!!!: PBADRV.sys              Mon Jan  7 14:12:13 2008 (4782798D)

Thank you for your help.

I have worked out the issues you mentioned, namely updating drivers and installing windows updates (offline, using WSUS since windows update hangs looking for updates).

By the end I tried to install the AMD video driver (freshly downloaded from Dell) but the result was the usual one: I could get to the login page, which was shown at high resolution but with horizontal lines such as those you see on a broken TV. Then, after entering my password, I got a BSOD with a x116 error at atikmpag.sys

My new perfmon and sysnative zips are available at https://1drv.ms/f/s!AulX-gNFXRu8k2gyqKWinK6q1V97 , if they may help.

Any further assistance will be appreciated.

Regards and seasons' greetings

Dario

PS: I'm considering to upgrade from Win7 to Win10 in the hope that this may fix my problem. Is it a crazy idea?

I prefer W10.  With W7 most people end up having to fix their Windows Update problems (which I can't help with) before being able to work on fixing their other problems.

This link (thank to CKing123) helps a lot of people w/W7 update problems:  http://wu.krelay.de/en/

But the STOP 0x116 error is a Video TDR error.  I've made this page to help troubleshooting those errors:  http://www.carrona.org/VideoTDR.html

Please follow the suggestions there to see if that helps.

In short, this is an error with your video card - it can be hardware or software related.
If you fix all the software issues (using the webpage I cited), then it's most likely that this is a hardware problem.
If that's the case, the next step is to try another video card.  If you don't have another that you can try, then I'd suggest purchasing one from a shop that will let you return it for your money back (if it's not needed).

No new memory dumps in the uploaded reports.

If the system is still spitting out BSOD's, then this makes it more likely that it's a hardware problem.

Installing W10 may not fix it - but it certainly won't hurt.

EDIT:  corrected VideoTDR.html link

Thank you again for your help. Replacing the video card in a laptop I guess is almost impossible but I'd like to go through your help page to troubleshoot TDR errors. The problem is that

http://www.carrona.org/VideoTDR.hrml

looks like a broken link. Could you please check it?

I'll keep you posted about what I can do, also as a service to the community.

Best regards

Dario

Unfortunately, you were right, my video card has problems. Although nothing showed up upon running a standard PSA, an extended PSA returned:

Fail PSA V4206
Error 2000:0332
Integrity test discrepancy
validation: 85130

Dell site doesn't explain much about what this "integrity test discrepancy" is but suggests to flash the BIOS (done, to no avail) and to rese(a)t the card. Actually, in one column it says "reset", in the other it says "reseat". Now, re-seatting the card sounds to me as a physical action to see if the card properly fits in its connector (and that would require unmounting the whole laptop - nothing that I may feel comfortable with); while resetting sounds more like flashing the card again.

Two final questions for you:
(1) what is an integrity test discrepancy?
(2) does it make any sense to reset a video card? and how could I do it? Also: does it make any sense to flash the card using tools as those I found in http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/246888-29-guide-bios-modding-flashing ? I don't want to mess up everything but my pc is very sluggish and my university can't buy me a new one before the first days of February...
Thank you again for your support. I really appreciated it.
Best regards
Dario

AFAIK - and integrity test discrepancy is a problem with the integrity test.  I presume this tests the integrity of the video card (or of some component of it).

Most Google results for this refer to memory - either RAM or video RAM.

You can test your RAM with MemTest86 and Prime95's Blend test

You can test your video with the video tests here:  http://www.carrona.org/hwdiag.html

Reset is an imprecise term - it could mean almost anything.

Reseat is a bit more precise, but generally isn't of any use with a laptop - as the video card(s) is/are usually soldered onto the motherboard (so there is no "slot" for it to be reseated in)..

As for modding the BIOS - what are you going to do if the system stops working?  On a stock system I don't think that these steps are needed or advisable.

In short, I'd talk to someone at the university about what to do if it dies before the end of February (or it the video card is found to be bad now).
