Hi guys

I was referred here ny the guys on the malware forum over problems I'm having with my computer. its not that old, and used for very little other than browsing and media. No games, no power hungry programs, so its baffling why its slowed to a crawl. Takes an age to boot, open chrome or explorer windows and if the computer isnt restarted regularly, forget about it. On top of that, my usb webcam just recently flicked itself on. which ob made me think it was malware but those guys think its a windows specific problem.

here's the log that prompted them:

@Coolverine

Viewing your Mini Toolbox Log: System Errors section indicates that your System Hard Drive is failing...
Example: Error: (12/06/2016 05:31:41 PM) (Source: disk) (User: )
Description: The device, \Device\Harddisk1\DR1, has a bad block

At this time your main concern should be Backing Up / Saving your important data i.e. Documents, Music, Pictures, anything You Can't Live Without.

You can then use one of the Hard Drive Diagnostic Tools to verify the System Errors Section.

Depending on who you ask "Which tool is best?" you will get variable opinions.

My suggestion... If you know the Hard Drive Manufacturer then use their Diagnostic Tool (If Available)

Otherwise... I personally have used HDDScan http://hddguru.com/software/ in the past and found this tool to be a reliable one.

Once your Data is saved you can play around with your drive but it looks like a Hard Drive replacement is in order.

you said the computer is not very old, If it is still within the manufacturers warranty... Backup your Data and attempt to get a replacement. I would also suggest testing the hard drive and possibly the RAM if it is not under warranty. I personally use HD Sentinel for testing drives. I use memtest for testing RAM.

the machine is just out of warranty, hence my appearance here; when i say 'new-ish' I mean not just in age, but in that, it gets very little use at all

I have begun transferring files, and report back with details. thank you
