I'm working on an HP G56 notebook computer that is running Windows 7 Home. It has an Intel Celeron 900 processor @ 2.19 GHz and 3 Gb of memory.

When this computer runs normally, it gets very warm. Task manager is showing that the CPU is running at 100%. However, when I boot into safe mode, the computer runs much cooler and the CPU usage is much lower. I've tried starting each service/process individually to see if I could isolate which process could be causing the problem, but I was unsuccessful. I also ran several cleaning programs, such as CC Cleaner, Adware, Malware Anti-Malware Bytes, etc., but I still have the overheating problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I urge you to read and follow the instructions provided below.

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

Go to Piriform's website, and download the free version on the left.  Click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version. You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.

After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.

Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course):

post-33068-0-86653600-1480692866_thumb.j

Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot.

Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard

Now, once you are back in the forum topic you are posting in, click the ADD REPLY or REPLY TO THIS TOPIC button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Add Reply below the Reply box.

Purchase and use a usb-powered external cooling fan assembly [one giant fan or twin fans] .  Many laptops, notebooks, netbooks, can get quite warm, even hot from time to time.  My two laptops always have a cooling assembly underneath.  Now, Hamlius is very correct, hardware and software operations can indeed make for hot temp operations.  Even so, an usb-powered external cooling assembly cannot hurt.

The max temperature for that CPU is 77 Celsius...reflected temp per Speccy is 96 Celsius...obvious case of CPU overheating.

Yes, that's nearly hot enough to boil water, and that is with the computer on a cooling stand, per Roland's suggestion. This is also restoring the computer to factory settings; no other software that what was in the recovery partition, plus updating to SP1. I hope you can find something that is causing this. Initially, there was a process, svchost.exe that was using about 98 percent of the CPU for a very long time, until I stopped it in task manager. Then mscorsvw.exe began hogging the CPU, and I could not get task manager to shut it down. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have never seen a computer act like this.

Clean the Fan and check for any Clogging or Buildup on vents { Strip Down }.

My HP G6 was doing the same and i cleaned it 6 mths ago , strip / Clean.

Last week it started high Cpu again 90C , this time i stripped it all down and removed everything , their was a piece of lint buildup between the fan outlet and the heat exchanger about 5mm x 40mm , actually surprised me !.....cleaned all out , reassembled  , test , runs at 40c and quiet as.

FWIW:  Even though you did a clean install 2 days ago, you have evidence of a known Windows Update problem.  This should have nothing to do with your highly excessive temperatures.  I suggest you follow the suggestions by Havachat and address the primary issue as a hardware problem.

I was thinking along the same lines, and attempted to take the case apart, but there is one screw that has a badly damaged head and is so tight that I cannot get a screwdriver that will turn it. I'm wondering if there is an Ez Out small enough for this screw. The other screws all use a #0 Phillips and they come out with no problems. And, of course, the recalcitrant screw is right at the corner where the cooling fan is located. I did blow some canned air into the air intake on the bottom and was able to get some dirt and debris out of it. I'll keep working at getting this case opened up. Thanks for all your help, everyone!

After cleaning out the computer itself, continue using the external cooling assembly, even with the best of company hardware conditions, the cooling assembly never hurts  :)

I always become a little bit concerned when I see discrepancies this large in temperatures, especially in a computer so limited in space that the 96C should influence the temperature of the hdd which is reading at 32C.  I have seen discrepancies like this in the past and found the readings to be inaccurate when they are compared to the readings of another utility like CPUID's HDMonitor.  Download the free version, run the scan and create a screenshot of the scan to post in your topic.

If you are not familiar with creating a screenshot I've provided instructions below.

How to make a screenshot

1. Download and run A Thousand Words .

2. Follow the wizard to capture a screenshot.

3. Use the built-in editor to resize, edit, or re-capture your screen shot.

4. Your screen shot will be saved to your desktop when you finish the wizard.

You can post the screenshot in your next post as an attachment.

Just below the area where you write text in a post there is the Post button, to the right of this is More Reply Options.

Post2_zpsf05c0430.png

When you click on More Relpy Options  you will see Attach Files and Browse, click on Browse, this will open Pictures on your computer, click on the image you want to post, then click on Attach This File, then Add Reply.
