Not sure what's going on? Doesn't seem like a virus, all my scans came up clean. I bought this laptop pre-loaded in early August and so far it's been working pretty great. It's possible I'm not seeing what the actual problem is.



Windows 7 Professional SP1 (64-bit) // HP EliteBook 8460p = 2.50GHz + 8GB RAM

Currently Testing: Linux Mint 17.3 XFCE on a Dell Inspiron 531 (2.1Ghz +3GB RAM)

I urge you to read and follow the instructions provided below.
 
Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.
 
Checkmark the following checkboxes:
  List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
  List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
 
Click Go and paste the content into your next post.
 
Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

   Go to Piriform's website, and download the free version on the left.  Click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version. You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.

    After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.
 
     Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course):

     Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot.

     Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard

Now, once you are back in the forum topic you are posting in, click the ADD REPLY or REPLY TO THIS TOPIC button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Add Reply below the Reply box.

Will you also please use the System File Checker to check the integrity of operating system files, while waiting for Louis' remarks? Thanks. :wink:
 
:step1: System File Checker
 
• Open the Start Menu, and in the Search programs and files box, type cmd.
• Right-click on cmd, select Run as administrator, and accept any User Account Control prompts.
• In the Elevated Command Prompt type:

sfc /SCANNOW

• You will see one of three things:

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. Details are included in the CBS.Log %WinDir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log.

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log %WinDir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log.

If you see the two latter messages, please immediately type the following command:

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log >"%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt"

sfcdetails.txt is a log which we may use in future.

I would start with uninstalling Glary Utilities, another registry cleaner/optimizer.

I've uninstalled Glary. Everything seems to be fine after it's been completely shut down for a couple of hours but if I put the laptop to sleep or leave it on for a long time, the problem returns.

The Application section of Event Viewer...will show you your hanging apps.  Take a look and see which apps are problematical.  Me...I would uninstall those apps and run the system without them, for comparative purposes.

 

That means Glasswire.

After following Louis' excellent instructions can you run a CHKDSK? This process may take a while, depending on your drive's size.
 
:step1: Check Disk

WARNING: It is recommended that you backup ALL your files. If CHKDSK finds and repairs a corrupted sector, you may lose your data.
 
• Open the Start Menu, and in the Search programs and files box, type cmd.
• Right-click on cmd, select Run as administrator, and accept any User Account Control prompts.
• In the Elevated Command Prompt type:
chkdsk /R
• You should see this message:
The type of the file system is NTFS.
Cannot lock current drive.

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another
process.  Would you like to schedule this volume to be
checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)
• Type Y and hit Enter on your keyboard.
• Restart your computer and CHKDSK will run.
 
Once CHKDSK is compete, we need the log:
 
• Open the Start Menu, and in the Search programs and files box, type powershell.exe.
• Right-click on powershell.exe, select Run as administrator, and accept any User Account Control prompts.
• Copy this command:
get-winevent -FilterHashTable @{logname="Application"; id="1001"}| ?{$_.providername –match "wininit"} | fl timecreated, message | out-file Desktop\CHKDSKResults.txt
Right-click in Powershell to paste the command.
• You will find CHKDSKResults.txt on your Desktop. Copy/paste the log in your next reply.

When I get a chance to, I will. I had a birthday on Friday and next weekend is Christmas with family visiting/staying so I got really busy away from the computer. Of all times to start acting crazy, laptop!

Popping in quickly to say that I've noticed it's mostly programs that use the internet that freeze up first? Not noticing too much trouble with offline programs unless I'm trying to run a bunch of them at once. It seems a bit ridiculous to have this issue with 8gigs of RAM but again I still could be missing something.
