I have another thread going about my W10 machine, this is about my 64 bit W7 machine.

I have a 60 GB SSD and a regular hard drive installed on this machine.  I have tried to pull most programs and photos off of it, and would like to use it for a trading platform. I haven't really used it for 6 months or so.  Yesterday I tried to fire it up and get my updates up to date but it was really slow. (We have a really crappy DSL internet here).  I checked my SSD and said it only had one 1.5GB available.  This is odd, since I have it pared down so far completely clearing out the Pictures, Music and Videos directories.   I did see that my Windows directory is using almost 35 GB.  That can't be right, can it?

Also, when I select Download Updates nothing seems to happen. I checked and can surf the web, so I know I do have a connection. On the Windows Update screen it says Downloading Updates....  Downloading 1 update (0 KB total, 0% complete) and just hangs there.

Any suggestions here?

Thanks.

I urge you to read and follow the instructions provided below.

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

Go to Piriform's website, and download the free version on the left.  Click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version. You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.

After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.

Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course):

post-33068-0-86653600-1480692866_thumb.j

Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot.

Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard

Now, once you are back in the forum topic you are posting in, click the ADD REPLY or REPLY TO THIS TOPIC button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Add Reply below the Reply box.

Free Space currently shows about 8GB on the SSD. I currently have about 26GB in my Windows folder on a Windows 7 64bit computer and not many programs installed. 60GB is really somewhat small for a Windows 7 install.

Download TFC and run it in an admin account. How much space does it recover?

TFC recovered 2.4 GB, so it's getting better.  Does TFC clean better than CCleaner?

I now have 9.5 GB free, so that is better. My SSD is probably 5+ years old. I didn't realize Window 7 took so much space.

CCleaner does a fairly good job. TFC cleans temp files across all users.

Next step would be to clear out the Windows 7 update files if the computer is running fine. They is no use keeping your Update files if the computer runs fine, especially on the size of drive you have.

Edit: I would also make sure you are not using a lot of space for System Restore.

Edit Edit: Was it your intention to use Window's backup feature?

Going over your MiniToolBox log I saw that you have the following programs installed:

Adobe Flash Player 11 Plugin (HKLM-x32\...\Adobe Flash Player Plugin) (Version: 11.9.900.152 - Adobe Systems Incorporated)
Free Window Registry Repair (HKLM-x32\...\Free Window Registry Repair) (Version:  - )

I would uninstall Free Window Registry Repair with Revo Uninstaller (you have Revo installed) and update Flash (be sure to uncheck unwanted offers!) Neither BleepingComputer nor I recommend using registry cleaners and using an out-dated version of Flash is a security risk.

Bleeping Computer DOES NOT recommend the use of registry cleaners/optimizers for several reasons:

Registry cleaners are extremely powerful applications that can damage the registry by using aggressive cleaning routines and cause your computer to become unbootable.

The Windows registry is a central repository (database) for storing configuration data, user settings and machine-dependent settings, and options for the operating system. It contains information and settings for all hardware, software, users, and preferences. Whenever a user makes changes to settings, file associations, system policies, or installed software, the changes are reflected and stored in this repository. The registry is a crucial component because it is where Windows "remembers" all this information, how it works together, how Windows boots the system and what files it uses when it does. The registry is also a vulnerable subsystem, in that relatively small changes done incorrectly can render the system inoperable. For a more detailed explanation, read Understanding The Registry.

Not all registry cleaners are created equal. There are a number of them available but they do not all work entirely the same way. Each vendor uses different criteria as to what constitutes a "bad entry". One cleaner may find entries on your system that will not cause problems when removed, another may not find the same entries, and still another may want to remove entries required for a program to work.

Not all registry cleaners create a backup of the registry before making changes. If the changes prevent the system from booting up, then there is no backup available to restore it in order to regain functionality. A backup of the registry is essential BEFORE making any changes to the registry.

Improperly removing registry entries can hamper malware disinfection and make the removal process more difficult if your computer becomes infected. For example, removing malware related registry entries before the infection is properly identified can contribute to system instability and even make the malware undetectable to removal tools.

The usefulness of cleaning the registry is highly overrated and can be dangerous. In most cases, using a cleaner to remove obsolete, invalid, and erroneous entries does not affect system performance but it can result in "unpredictable results".

Unless you have a particular problem that requires a registry edit to correct it, I would suggest you leave the registry alone. Using registry cleaning tools unnecessarily or incorrectly could lead to disastrous effects on your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again. For routine use, the benefits to your computer are negligible while the potential risks are great.
