My HP DVD-RW drive (model HP 840b) is capable of reading CDs (both data or audio), but is not capable of reading any type of DVDs (the DVDs are fine since they can be read from another computer).

The following error occurs when a DVD is placed in the drive: "Please insert a disc into drive E:" .

Can anyone please help me?

How old is this DVD Drive?

Is it still on Warranty?

It could be possible that the laser that is used for the DVD is defective.

The DVD drive is 14 months old and out of warranty. It has been seldomly used. I'm not sure the DVD is defective since it reads Cds.
