I don't get a BSOD. It seems to happen more often if I have a bunch of Chrome tabs open on one screen and MetaTrader 4, a universal Forex trading program, on my other screen.  I leave the machine on overnight. In the morning, both screens are displaying the either a B&W crash screed or the ASUS BIOS home page.  I  power off the computer by turning off the power supply. When it comes back on it boots up completely normally. There are no memory or mini-dump files. This has been going on for months. It never happens when I am using the machine. Since my last post about this, I ran Memory Test for Windows 64 and no errors came up.  The machine didn't act up for quite a while, but this morning I had the B&W SOD.

This is a machine I built up myself.
I am attaching the zip files for the event log.

Nothing real significant in the Admin log file.

Usually this means that we're looking at a hardware problem.

Please start with these free hardware diagnostics:  http://www.carrona.org/hwdiag.html

Pleas complete them ALL and then let us know the results.

Your UEFI/BIOS (version 1601) dates from 2016.  Please check at the manufacturer's website to see if there are any UEFI/BIOS updates available for your system.  This is just in case there has been a more recent update.
FYI - W8 and W10 communicate more with the UEFI/BIOS than previous versions of Windows, so it's important to ensure that the UEFI/BIOS is kept up to date (and that outdated UEFI/BIOS' may be the cause of some compatibility issues).

Although you appear to have a reasonable number of Windows Update hotfixes for this version of your OS, please double check for any new Windows Updates.  It only takes one update to cause a problem, so it's essential that you have all of them.  The actual number is not important.  Rather it's important that you checked manually, installed any available updates, and didn't experience any errors when checking or updating.

Lot's of USB errors in the WER section of the MSINFO32 report.

Please let us know what USB devices that you have attached to the system.

I've gotta worry about your Don't Sleep shortcut in your startups.

As the system seems to have problems when left alone, this is (IMO) the prime suspect

Try disabling it and see if that helps

Just FYI, we don't recommend registry cleaners.  At best they don't help, at worst they can damage the registry and cause serious problems with Windows.

Thanks.

  • It did need a Windows update, so I did that.
  • 1601 is the latest BIOS from ASUS.
  • Don't Sleep is a recently loaded program. I installed it to keep Windows from restarting, thereby closing my trading program, which in turns kills the bots controlling the trading.. The crashing issue predates Don't Sleep.
  • Metatrader 4, A.K.A MT4, was really hogging computer resources.  I did find a fix for that today.  Maybe that will help.
  • I think there is something odd about my USB. The only device which is always connected is my APC backup-power supply. The USB has been acting up when I try and use flash drives, it seems kind of hit and miss. Is there some kind of test I can do there?

There are a LOT of hardware tests on the link. I already did a memory test, so I guess I'll start with the hard drive tests.

Thanks again.

Sorry for the delay in responding, lot's of personal stuff going on :(

I've never had good luck with the USB stuff on UPS devices.

Try uninstalling it and see if that helps (you can still keep the UPS connected - just disconnect the USB cable after uninstalling the software.

Please finish ALL of the tests.  They are:

- malware

- Memory

- Hard drive

- Furmark

- Prime95 Blend test

- other video (3 or 4 of them)

- CPU test (only need to run one or two)
