Blue screens, freezing programs, about:blank usurping my home page (which I've deleted in the Registry's safe mode and it still returns), etc. This has been a terrible week! I've used around 20 different dowloads of free programs and deleted plenty, both from windows files and the Registry. But I really need help at this point. With all the best intentions and dogged attention over the past week--I don't really know what I am doing when I am making these deletions. Could someone with experience help please? I am exhausted. Thank you.

Hi Sam, Thanks for the the hand. Just in case its useful to know, I installed Norton's about a month ago because my computer felt sluggish but when the situation became acute and I was downloading other programs to target what Norton's was missing, I uninstalled it. Also a couple of days ago I received messages telling me I was the victim of software counterfeiting & then they disappeared.

Here's goes the uninstall list --

I don't see any signs of malware in your log. I do see that you have 5 antispyware programs all running the background. They are bound to conflict and may be causing some of your problems. These are the 5 that I see running in your first log.

Spybot's Teatimer
Ewido
Spyware Doctor
Windows Defender
SpySubtract

They are all decent programs, but you should not run them all at the same time in the background. Of the bunch, Spyware Doctor is the best and will provide very good real time protection if you run it in the background. All of the others should be disabled and you should only run scans manually.

You have some older versions of Java, which are security risks.
Please uninstall these programs:

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 3
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_10

The current version of Java can be downloaded from http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp Scroll down the page to 'Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 8' and press the 'Download' button. On the new web page, click the 'Accept License Agreement' button. Then select 'Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language' in the Windows Platform area just below the Accept button.

Once you disable or uninstall the antispyware programs that you aren't going to use for real time protection, post a new hijackthis log and let me know how things are working.

Hi Sam,
I deleted the programs as you recommended. I still have Spyware Doctor, Adware SE, CWShredder (i think) I did re-install Norton's since I had gone to the trouble of actually purchasing it a month ago when my system only felt sluggish. It was not easy to install this time. After many attempts it still could not fully update...? Tho it scanned. I am very skeptical about Norton's. So after I uninstalled, ran Hijackthis and rebooted when Nortons came back it had [shadows?] around its image. I then attempted to burn some CDs in Sonic Record Now as a test and sure enough it would only burn the first and when I put another in to copy the whole system froze. I could not get the task master to pop up or the internet from either Mozilla Firefox or Internet Explorer. I couldn't even restart from the startup menu. I received an message about closing tfswctrl.exe when I tried to restart. Basically I couldn't shut down and had to crash out. When I came back up & tried to re-run a hijack this it also froze. Here's another uninstall log for your opinion. Thanks.

I'm not a big fan of Norton. It let's far too much malware through IMO, and it bogs down your system with all the running processes in uses.

The log I actually need to see is a hijackthis log(like the one in your first post). Then we'll see what else we can trim out.

Hi Sam, I totally agree with you about Norton's. In fact there was no crisis on my computer until it came into the pic. Maybe I can get my money back. Thank you for your attention.

You've got a few programs running automatically on startup that are not necessary. You can fix these lines with Hijackthis to stop them from loading in the background. This will help your performance somewhat.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UC_Start] C:\Program Files\IBM\Updater\\ucstartup.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdateManager] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sonic\Update Manager\sgtray.exe" /r
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ibmmessages] C:\Program Files\IBM\Messages By IBM\ibmmessages.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_08\bin\jusched.exe"
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ibmmessages] C:\Program Files\IBM\Messages By IBM\ibmmessages.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Skype] "C:\Program Files\Skype\Phone\Skype.exe" /nosplash /minimized

You can research all of your startup entries from here.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/

You may decide that there are others that you want to fix also.
