I'm using a Dell Dimension E520 desktop with 3 Gigs of RAM, a 3 GHz processor, DVD ROM drive and running Windows XP. It was my son's computer that hasn't been used in a couple of years due to some unknown issue. I cannot update the AVG antivirus software: the message is "Update failed, General Error." I scanned the computer and AVG found two instances of Win32/Heri virus that it supposedly quarantined. It won't let me install a newer version of AVG for the same reason. I was able to update Spybot, ran a scan and found many issues (like 100's) which it took care of. One that it couldn't delete was:
The last virus that AVG detected was: C:\progranfiles\spybot-search and destroy2\SDWSCSvc.exe.
My plan is to attempt to upgrade to Windows 8 or 8.1 if the computer is compatible and I can clean it up first.
I am afraid to connect to the Internet for fear of contaminating other computers on my home network. Is this possible? I'm typing this email from a laptop.
Any help you can provide to clean the machine would be greatly appreciated.
Moved from Windows XP to Am I Infected
