Hi All, any help with this would be greatly appreciated. I became infected the other day and removed many objects that came up as spyware already. However, AVG is finding Trojan Horse Generic2.AM in two files "3d.exe" and "run32.dll". It has moved them to the virus vault and they are marked as backup copies. Is it safe for me to delete this since the heal option is not available?

Here's my HJT log to help:

ps- if anyone can tell me what to remove so MS Messenger is not automatically loaded, it would be appreciated.

Thanks all for your help!

Hello,

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: File Print FedEx Kinko's - {9566395F-43D2-4c64-B525-B501FFA276E2} - mscoree.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: File Print FedEx Kinko's - {9566395f-43d2-4c64-b525-b501ffa276e2} - mscoree.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ServiceHost] "C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2\bin\svchost.exe" ""
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2\bin\npjpi142.dll

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Software icon > add/remove programs.
  • Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )
It should have next icon next to it: Posted Image
    Select it and click Remove.
  • Delete next folder: C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2
  • Then Download and install the newest version from here:http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

ps- if anyone can tell me what to remove so MS Messenger is not automatically loaded, it would be appreciated.

For that, you have to check and fix next entries in hijackthis:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background
O9 - Extra button: Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Windows Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe

Reboot and post a new hijackthislog in your next reply.

Ok, I did everything you said. Below is the new HJT log. I am still worried about the two viruses I have sitting in my AVG virus vault though. The files infected are 3d.exe and rundll32.exe It won't let me heal them, but it also says they are backup copies. Does this mean the problem has already been fixed and its safe to delete these from the virus vault?

Merci pour votre aide.
Ton ami d'aux Etats-Unis,

Tim

Hello,

The current formatting of your log makes it difficult to read, so in notepad:
On top, click Format >uncheck Word Wrap

I am still worried about the two viruses I have sitting in my AVG virus vault though. The files infected are 3d.exe and rundll32.exe

When an antivirus is not able to disinfect (heal) a file, it moves it to the quarantaine. This is normal. But the rundll32.exe it found, I want to be sure here it isn't the rundll32.exe from your C:\Windows\system32-folder, because that one is legit and needed, so AVG may not quarantaine it. Ofcourse it could be a rundll32.exe from somewhere else on your system as well. So what I want to know is -- is the rundll32.exe still present in your C:\Windows\system32-folder? This is important to know what rundll32.exe AVG exactly quarantained -- from which folder. Because in case it is the legit rundll32.exe from your C:\Windows\system32 - folder, you may not delete it by emptying the vault.

So let me know in your next reply if there is a rundll32.exe in your C:\windows\system32 - folder.

Sorry about that- here you go.

Thanks,
Tim

As far as which files are where: The 3d.exe is in c:/windows and the rundll32.exe is in the /system32 folder.
I think the 3d.exe is deleteable as its from a shady game I downloaded off the internet (I think this is where the virus originated).
However, what am I supposed to do with the rundll32.exe? I have two rundll32 files in my /system32 folder, but I can't tell what extensions they are. They are 32.5kb and 19.7kb in size.

Hold on... I understood that AVG put the 3d.exe and rundll32.exe in vault (quarantaine)? So I want to know where the rundll32.exe is right now.
Don't delete the rundll32.exe from your C:\Windows\system32-folder, because that one is legit. And it is impossible that two same files are present in the same folder.
So, I guess most probably AVG quarantained a file called rundll32.dll and not rundll32.exe
To show extensions, perform next:

Please set your system to show all files.
Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

So this is really confusing now... If AVG quarantaines a file, it should be in the quarantaine folder of AVG. So it's confusing you say that they are still in their original folder after AVG quarantained them and put them in vault.

Don't delete anything -- we'll have an online scanner scan, and I want the log afterwards, so I can see which ones are infected and where they are right now.

So perform next please:

* Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE:
  • Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
  • Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
  • Click the "Delete Cookies" button
  • Next to it, Click the "Delete Files" button
  • When prompted, place a check in: "Delete all offline content", click OK
* Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed):
  • Go to Tools > Options.
  • Click Privacy in the menu on the left side of the Options window.
  • Click the Clear button located to the right of each option (History, Cookies, Cache).
  • Click OK to close the Options window
Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing by clicking Clear All.
A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the information.
* Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin
  • Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
  • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
  • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
  • Press OK to remove them.
* Perform an onlinescan with panda: (please use this scanner instead of any other scanner!)
Panda Online
- Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open...click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
Post the contents of the Panda scan report in your next reply.

Your hijackthislog looks clean.

No, AVG quarantined rundll32.exe
I just looked in the windows/system32 folder with extensions showing now and one of the rundll32's is the .exe. The other one is named the same thing, but doesn't show the extension.

I'm guessing AVG fixed it now and the rundll32.exe in the system32 folder is clean. I'm assuming it would be safe to delete the quarantined files, but I'll go ahead and run the scanner before I do this, just in case.

Here's the text of the log. It found something AVG had been missing. It was buried in an email it looks like, but I don't think it was ever opened as I'm good at picking out viruses in email.

So is it safe to delete the items in my AVG virus vault?

Just rebooted to check- everything is great. I like that Panda scanner, my AVG didn't even pick up that virus.

Thank you much for your help/merci beaucoup!

Glad I could help.

To keep this clean in the future, I would suggest the following things:

Install Spywareblaster
SpywareBlaster doesn`t scan and clean for so-called spyware, but prevents it from being installed in the first place. It blocks the popular spyware ActiveX controls, and also prevents the installation of any of them via a webpage.

* Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.
* Don't click on links inside popups.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software; because most of these so called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust. Because a lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

Let your antispywarescanner(s) scan frequently and don't forget to update before.

And I do suggest you perform an online virusscan once in a while. (Housecall and/or Bitdefender). Because what one virusscanner can't find another one maybe can.
Also make sure that your virusscanner, the one that is installed on your system is always up to date!
