I was unable to install Windows 7 on an OEM laptop and the Recovery disks were producing errors during the install so took it to an IT Repair shop. They managed to install Windows 7 and 'activate' it on the spot. This was not actually necessary as I have the OEM product key and it is on the same computer. Nevertheless it passed Windows Genuine Validation...

Now they also installed and 'activated' Office 2016 which I have subsequently removed. I did a full scan of the laptop last night and KIS 2017 generated this report (sorry about the lack of formatting):

started Time: Today, 04/12/2016 02:53

I did a fresh scan after removing the Office 2016 folder which was in the D drive and now KIS reports no virus and never did in relation to the C drive where of course Office was installed.

I scanned the Office 2016 file that the repair person left me and Avast produced this report (see attached).

Now I am a little lost in trying to interpret these results and am thinking of installing Bitdefender IS 2017 as a trial to double check but I have no confidence in these conflicting results as KIS says it's clear yet Avast reports something different so maybe KIS has missed something here?...

Why would a repair shop install such expensive programs and OS without your permission? Did you pay for these programs?

Sorry the above text from KIS is too unclear. You can download the xls file from here: http://kisreport04-12-16.weebly.com/

I am now living in a third world country. It's the norm here. I didn't pay much for it - less than $3!

This is normally why I do almost all installations myself but the laptop had a new screen installed, BIOS upgrade and new HDD. The recovery disks were coming up with errors. In fact I put a whole separate post on it here (http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-3255621/toshiba-a500-boot-stall.html) which was never answered but somehow the shop managed to do what I didn't manage to, but with a catch.

Obviously what they installed came bundled with malware. If you want help cleaning up your computer here at BC you will need

to remove all pirated programs. That's one of the rules here...not to assist with using stolen/ pirated/ cracked software.

Once you have done that I suggest you start a new topic in the Malware Removal Forum using the directions below.

Please follow the instructions in the Malware Removal and Log Section Preparation Guide starting at Step 6.

  • If you cannot complete a step, then skip it and continue with the next.
  • In Step 6 there are instructions for downloading and running FRST which will create two logs.

When you have done that, post your logs in the Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs forum, NOT here, for assistance by the Malware Response Team.

Start a new topic, give it a relevant title and post your log(s) along with a brief description of your problem, a summary of any anti-malware tools you have used and a summary of any steps that you have performed on your own. If you cannot produce any of the required logs...start the new topic anyway. Explain that you followed the Prep. Guide, were unable to create the logs, and describe what happened when you tried to create them. A member of the Malware Removal Team will walk you through, step by step, on how to clean your computer.

After doing this, please reply back in this thread with a link to the new topic so we can close this one.

DO NOT bump your new topic. Wait for a response from one of the Team Members.

Don't worry about it. I should have known better. Now I know why I don't let anyone touch my pc's. I am formatting my HDD which will resolve the problem.

Sounds like a good plan...and probably the best.

OK, there have been many late nights on installations. I refer to this article: http://208.74.204.50/t5/System-Recovery-and-Recovery/Satellite-L455-S5000-Recovery-w-disks-LPCFILTER-SYS-Error/td-p/302968 and I now suspect that the original problem was that the new disk (WD10JPVX) is AF (Advanced Format)  which explains all the errors while installing the recovery disks. I have now installed the recovery disks on an older SATA HDD and the installation and post installation process has been smooth.

The main problem I am getting now is that it is impossible to find a 16" screen where I live so the technician installed a 15.6" screen and I am now getting fluctuations in brightness (i.e. moves from very bright to dull). The brightness control is also the wrong way round. I am wondering if there is a compatibility issue.

At least the main virus problem has been eliminated.

My thought is using screen that is not identical to the one installed by the manufacturer will have problems. But you can

start a new topic in the Windows 7 forum. Someone there may be able to come up with a solution. Just a thought....at home you could

use a monitor.

I use a monitor with my own laptop but it's difficult to convince other people to do the same. I am thinking that you may be right and this could well be a compatibility issue.

I may well start a new post on the Windows 7 forum if necessary. I actually upgraded the graphics driver this morning as a first step so will see if that makes a difference first.
