Computer: Dell Inspiron 5748, Intel i7-4510U @ 2.00 GHz, RAM 8GB, 64 bit, Windows 7 Home ed w/sp1. Firefox as browser.

My laptop has been virtually problem free until today. I was downloading a movie and got an alert message from my Avast virus software. Software says it stopped the threat and I reverted out from where I was, opting not to download the movie.

Right after, Firefox became unresponsive. I was having trouble getting anything to work properly. I attempted to run an Avast scan and it was also unresponsive.

I shut down the PC and tried to reboot. After Windows startup screen I entered my log in password. Screen went black. I rebooted again into safe mode without network. In save mode I tried Avast, wouldn't work. I tried Malware Bytes in safe mode. It worked and completed a scan finding nothing.

I tried to boot normally again and after log in it went to black screen.

I tried looking around for a solution and most folks seem to say this black screen is the video driver. I'm not so sure based on the event that happened right before the problem.

Do I have a virus? Would a system restore point solve it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Boot into safe mode...do the following, as prescribed.

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

Go to Piriform's website, and download the free version on the left.  Click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version. You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.

After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.

Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course):

post-33068-0-86653600-1480692866_thumb.j

Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot.

Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard

Now, once you are back in the forum topic you are posting in, click the ADD REPLY or REPLY TO THIS TOPIC button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Add Reply below the Reply box.

Thank you for your assistance Louis. FYI, I was able to load my PC normally this morning and initially it seemed ok. I quickly noticed it is very slow to load anything though.

Here are the items you requested:

Aside from the fact that the grambir.whatever...is a problem for your system...the only odd thing that I see is that your browser RAM max usage is about 3 times what I would expect it to be.

Interestingly Grmblr hadn't been giving me any issues at all.

What would cause the RAM usage be so high?

Should I uninstall gramblr and see the outcome?

I would certainly uninstall it...then follow that with chkdsk /r and the sfc /scannow command.

I would also uninstall McAfee Web Advisor.
