Laptop was acting up, I was stupid, and ran Combofix, ignoring the warnings, and although it has worked well for me in the past, this time it's bit me in the butt. I tried that file restore thing program but I get the following error:

"ERROR: 0x00007766!! Aborting!"

In the Qoobox/backenv, I see a whole bunch of .dat files that most likely contain all the data I really need, but I have no idea how to get them, and they're about 1 KB in size. I really need these files, all help is highly appreciated!

I'm running Windows 7, all my desktop icons are missing, all I have is Computer and Recycle Bin. Also, all the items on my taskbar near the start button (IE, Windows Explorer, etc.) are gone as well, and so are favorites.

Thank you!

Below is my FSRT.txt results, and I attached my Combofix and Addition log files.

Hi,

I've asked combofix's developer sUBs to have a look at this.

Whilst we wait, please attach the file  C:\Qoobox\ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt to your next post

It's also possible that your files aren't deleted, just hidden. So please follow the instructions here: https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/show-hidden-files-in-windows-7/ to show hidden files and see if you can now see them

Thank you very much for the response, and yes I tried that, but nothing, even after unchecking the "Hide protected system files" too  :(

Hi,

Please upload the file C:\Qoobox\ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt as an attachment to your next post

Also, how much music did you have? The combofix log indicates that it freed up 172 megabytes of space (this is expected due to the cleanup of temporary files), so if your music took up more space than that, it must still be on your hard drive somewhere.

Instead of navigating to your Documents folder using a shortcut, navigate directly to the exact location. So navigate first to the C:\ drive, then the Users folder. Open each folder inside the Users folder and check for the presence of a Documents folder. For each Documents folder that you find, look inside it and see if your documents are there.

I tried that file restore thing program but I get the following error:

"ERROR: 0x00007766!! Aborting!"

Try running it as an administrator. (Right Click>Run as Administrator)

Tried that, same error. Also tried to search through all documents, the documents, music, favorites, and several other folders are completely missing. When I go to my documents through the start menu, It takes a long time to load, and all I get is empty on all accounts.

Neither of the combofix logs show any evidence of any files being targeted for deletion.

Please answer this question:

Around that much, but the really important stuff is the documents.

When I go to my documents through the start menu, It takes a long time to load, and all I get is empty on all accounts.

The My Documents icon is the start menu is a short cut.

We're going to use FRST to search your hard drive

Download the attached fixlist.txt file and save it to the same folder as FRST.

NOTE. It's important that both files, FRST and fixlist.txt are in the same location or it will not work.

Run FRST and press the Fix button just once and wait.
If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
When finished FRST will generate a log  (Fixlog.txt). Please attach it to your reply.

Done. I got the desktop icons back, but my documents, music and other stuff is still missing.

All we did was run a search, there's no reason anything would have been fixed.

It looks likely that this is a problem with hard drive failure or corruption. The first thing you should do is backup your pictures which are still present.

You can try using volume shadow copies to see if you can find any previous versions: https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/how-to-recover-files-and-folders-using-shadow-volume-copies/

If your documents are important and irreplaceable, I would advise that you seek local & professional help with data recovery. If they are wanted, but not irreplaceable, you can try the instructions for chkdsk below

Repair Hard Disk by CHKDSK with the /F (fix) option

  • Open the Start Menu, type cmd in the search box, right click on cmd.exe (at top), and click on "Run as administrator...".  The elevated command prompt opens to C:\Windows\System32>
  • In the elevated command prompt, type chkdsk c: /F, and press Enter. System will have message saying it cannot be done because the drive is in use, and ask if you want to do it at reboot. Say YES.
  • Close the elevated command prompt window.
  • Reboot the system. It will make repairs when it reboots.

It is likely that you will need to replace your hard drive and reinstall Windows. I would recommend that you consider moving to an SSD. It may also be time to consider replacing the PC.

In future, you should keep better backups of your documents. Dropbox, Google Drive and similar aren't perfect, but they are easy to use & are vastly better than having no backups

I tried all this, but I'm still missing files. I don't think it's corruption. Every time I boot the laptop up or go to "My Computer," I get a "E:\Desktop refers to a location that is unavailable" message. This was not happening before I ran Combofix. I don't understand. On Qoobox/Quarantine/C, it's all empty, yet ever since I ran Combofix, I am missing my Documents and Music folder, from all accounts. It's gone. Poof. The drive tested healthy by apps such as Crystaldiskinfo. I am completely clueless now.

"E:\Desktop refers to a location that is unavailable" message

This confirms that combofix didn't cause the problem. Your FRST log confirms that your computer only has a C:\ drive, and there is no plausible way in which combofix would make your desktop folder point to another drive. It would seem that you had an E:\ drive at one point, but it has now either been disconnected or failed entirely.

The E:\ drive could have been a second internal drive, an external drive, or a mapped network drive.
