Mod Edit:  Split from https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/633674/my-windows-update-issues - Hamluis.

Mein Gott! That is one heck of a process!

However, since the wife has been super patient with her HP laptop with Win 7 Home Premium hung up trying to Update for 3 days now, I'm going to give it a go.

Thank you, thank you for posting this.

I've been running 100% Linux now for months and been feeling a wee bit guilty now that my update process is straightforward and fast.

Mein Gott! That is one heck of a process!

It actually takes less than 5 minutes.

I merely broke it into small steps.

But, if the computer is stuck "checking for updates", one MUST get that process/service shut down first in order to get the 2 relevant patches to install manually.

>>BTW, if it's a "new" install of Windows 7, KB 3125574 will also help.

And, as I mentioned, if this does not work for you, then you likely have another problem (WU updates are varied, complex and often tricky to solve).

Cheers,

MM

Hi:

Great!

I certainly would not do all 233 at once.

I would do them in small bunches, in roughly chronological order (as some earlier patches will be prerequisites to others that come later).

A general approach might be:

  • Critical security updates for Windows
  • Important security updates for Windows
  • Critical and important updates for MS Office
  • .NET Security updates starting with the 3.5.1 level first and working up the sequence
  • (Recommended updates)
  • (Optional updates, as applicable to that system)

Infinite patience.

Do not use the computer for other things while updating.

HTH,

MM

Hola there MoxieMomma, I got the notification that I posted here but someone (*ahem*) either decided to move or remove....who knows.

I won't go Off Topic here, so just wanted to say "thanks again"

If this works, I'll send you a PM.

onward,

Winterland

Grinler changed the structure of the site to SSL on the 30th November and this resulted in some glitches for the space of about 24 - 36 hours. Other members have reported disappearing posts,or getting notifications but no post there when they look for them. I understand that these have been resolved but you will find more information here -

Unfortunately, much of my forum output was hit over the past few days by the perfect storm of the forum issue and by "me, too" posts' being split off and removed (!) by mods.

Alas, several of my replies -- acknowledged by the OPs to have been helpful and potentially helpful to others who might read the threads -- seem to have gone missing...

Oh, well.

I posted this in the original thread - and some how got in trouble for it - but also wanted to post here that this process worked!

Thank you, thank you.

My wife is super happy.

Appreciate you taking the time to post & share.
