Hi, I'm really glad I've managed to find this forum. I really hope that someone can help.
For a couple of weeks now my PC has been locking up. Sometimes straight after a reboot, sometimes after an hours use. When it locks all I can do is get the task manager up, where on the performance page my CPU and PF usage graphs show zero!.. All I can do at this point is a hard restart. I Have Mcafee Internet Security Suite which has showed nothing out of the ordinary on scan. Same with Spybot and Ad-Aware.
However in the last few days between the the three programs they have picked a couple of items up, one being The Puper Virus that McAfee records as found and cleaned.(This usually shows up as found and cleaned when another scanner is scanning). Ad-aware is finding 3 entries related to something called win32.trojan.downloader. It cleans it but when i restart the pc and do the scans again I go through the same cycles. I know a trojan doesn't self replicate but it certainly has a cool trick to keep itself in my machine. I have pasted a Ad-Aware scan log and a Hijackthis scan log at the bottom of this post..
What really concerns me apart from desperately needing to remove any nasties, is how they got there. In three years of owning this Pc I've been extremely proud of my "clean" system, and never experienced anything like this. I have the Mcafee suite running along with a hardware firewall in my router. I do regular scans (once a week), and use the protection offered by spybot (which doesn't show anything on a scan..).
I have read loads of posts across the net showing that all my programs with current files should be able to remove these entries but they are not restarting my pc just brings it back..
Also to aid the person who takers on this problem for me, I have read the instuctions on what to do before making a post. My next step is to wait for removal instruction..
Any removal advice would be very much appreciated.
Thank You in advance..

Hi and welcome to Bleeping Computer! My name is Sam and I will be helping you.

As you can see the Adaware log is quite long, and as a result ended up shorting your Hijackthis log. Please post a new hijackthis log only and we'll see what we can figure out for you.
Posted Image If I have helped you in any way, please consider a donation to help me continue the fight against malware.

Failing to respond back to the person that is giving up their own time to help you not only is insensitive and disrespectful, but it guarantees that you will never receive help from me again. Please thank your helpers and there will always be help here when you need it!

Thank You for your prompt reply.
I took a decision yesterday to delete the keys from the registry that ad-aware said it was going to and failed. I fully understand the damage that can be done from playing in the registry, but thankfully I do believe I killed it. It certainly stopped the lockups anyway.
Here is my Hijack this log..

That's good to hear. It was just registry entries, but good to get cleaned up nevertheless.

I see a few issues that show up in your log that we should address.

1. I see signs of both Mcafee and Norton in your log. It's not clear if you are using Norton's antivirus, but you should know that it's not a good idea to run two antivirus programs at the same time. Can you clarify this for me?

2. There's just a little cleaning up from old infections that we can do in your log.

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of the lines listed below. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

O21 - SSODL: coursings - {f8d02387-789a-4c0f-a1d8-8a93f33ee4df} - (no file)

3. I am concerned about a file that shows up in your log. It may already be gone, but if it's still present I'd like to get some more information on it.
  • Please go to Jotti's malware scan
  • Copy and paste the following file path into the "File to upload & scan" box on the top of the page:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\msgms.exe

  • Disable your firewall if you are using one.
  • Click on the submit button
  • Reenable your firewall as soon as you get results.
  • Please post the results in your next reply.
Reboot your computer and post a new hijackthis log.

Ok. I only have Mcafee antivirus running (to my knowledge?..)
The norton product I have is Sytemworks 2005. Although I think liveupdate is still lurking in my machine.
I think I have removed everything you suggested but have not been able to upload the file for checking as server has been "busy" all day. The few times I have been able to submit the file, an error message is returned saying that file is too small and firewall may be preventing the upload.. It isn't as i disabled it as advised.
Thank you for your reply.

My log as requested..

Try submitting that file to be scanned here instead.

http://www.virustotal.com/en/indexf.html

It's the same time of scan.
Save the report and post it back here in your next reply.

I do still see Live Update, but it may be required to keep all Symantec programs updated. Although I'm not sure why Systemworks would need to run in the background all the time.

Symantec(Norton) is a notorious resource hog and will slow down your computer.

I think, unless you can see more than one instance of any Norton product, it is the norton unerase protection that is running in the background. I'm happy enough to kill any symactec services apart from the unerase protection if they are detrimental to having a smooth running computer. I took the norton antivirus off because it was too heavy on the system. I couldn't do anything without norton checking and getting involved. Mcafee does seem "lighter", but i'm not impressed at having this trojan go undetected though. As i stated before, i've always been proud of my trouble free computing environment and always put it down to good solid protection. I am seriously thinking of looking for another internet security package.
Anyway, I digress..
My scan log as requested.

That file is clean, so at least we know we're not dealing with a malware issue.

Here are the Symantec processes that are running in the background.

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSetMgr.exe
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccEvtMgr.exe
C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\ALUSchedulerSvc.exe
C:\PROGRA~1\NORTON~2\NORTON~1\NPROTECT.EXE
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\CCPD-LC\symlcsvc.exe
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe

Does that seem like a lot just for Norton Protect? It does to me.

Mcafee is a little easier on resources than Norton, but not much. And you have to realize that while an antivirus program will detect and remove viruses, many of the trojans and spyware that is much more common right now will not be detected. For that you need a good antispyware program.

The three best in my opinon are:

Spysweeper
Spyware Doctor
Ewido

Only Ewido has a free version. By layering in protection to compliment your antivirus, you'll prevent a lot of malware that would slip by your antivirus. I'd also recommend having both Adaware and Spybot to run on a regular basis.

Here are some other recommendations that you may want to consider to further secure your computer.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

    Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

    or

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
