Looks to me to be one of those things that come in a package of CDs/DVDs. You know... the little foam thing that sits atop a stack of disks? Maybe it got inserted with a disk on a previous occasion?
That's precisely what I was thinking myself. I reckon it somehow got stuck to a blank disc that was inserted to the drive at some point. Which could be the cause of it not working anymore.....
The rubber 'pressure-grip' thing in an optical drive is usually part of the drive mechanism.....which in computer drives, presses up against the disk from the underneath. Not the top.....
