My SH224-BB DVD-drive didn´t read discs anymore and I  decided to take this thing apart. Now when I got the case off, some white rubber ring just fell out and I can´t figure out if it´s the right place for it: http://i.imgur.com/9K30iXi.jpg? I have tried it like that and it just fells off again.

Prehaps if you reassemble the optical drive, the white ring won't fall off.

I have tried to reassemble, but there will then be an empty slot and if I put CD-disk in and take it out, then the white ring just comes out.

I've never seen a white rubber ring in a DVD drive. There is a white puck on the inner top case but that is made from hard plastic. Does the drive function without the ring?

Yeah, I did a big research on youtube and didn´t find any DVD drive that had that ring, but it should be there, because it should hold against the disc.

And the drive does not function without it. I tried it. I even cleaned the lens and tried again. It shows up on My Computer, but when I insert disc it starts to run up and then after a second it dies out, then attempting again and so on.

Can you post a screenshot of the inner top section?

After looking at the images I don't know where that rubber ring comes from. I thought it may have been part of the upper puck but it is not, and it's not any kind of belt. I am at a loss, sorry.

Edit: NewEgg has a sale going on for a Samsung DVD burner for 12.99 after $7 promo discount. Shipping is extra. Promo ends today.

Looks to me to be one of those things that come in a package of CDs/DVDs. You know... the little foam thing that sits atop a stack of disks? Maybe it got inserted with a disk on a previous occasion?

That's precisely what I was thinking myself. I reckon it somehow got stuck to a blank disc that was inserted to the drive at some point. Which could be the cause of it not working anymore.....

The rubber 'pressure-grip' thing in an optical drive is usually part of the drive mechanism.....which in computer drives, presses up against the disk from the underneath. Not the top.....

Mike.

Take that ring and try to insert it on a CD case spindle; if it fits that's probably what it is. I have taken lots of DVDs apart and never seen anything like it.
