Constant 100% disk usage freezes Windows 10

I have been experiencing deteriorating performance on my computer characterised by the task manager reporting 100% disk usage, despite nothing showing more than 0.1mb/s I/O activity. I have no problems getting to the login screen, but as soon as I log in, it takes about 15 minutes before the computer will be usable. It seems to choke up when loading explorer and the taskbar. When it freezes, I can't hear any disk activity, but when the freezing ends, I can hear the familiar hard disk ticking sound. Unfortunately, I can't access the task manager during the startup, but I suspect that it's the same 100% disk usage problem.

 

I have disabled superfetch and windows search services to no avail. I am on a single hard disk that is practically still empty. I have run a chkdsk C: /f from the command prompt, and no errors were found. I have also manually set the page file to 8gb min, 12gb max (i have 8gb physical ram). At this stage, I'm running out of ideas. This problem seems to have started since the anniversary update. Please help with this problem, and let me know what information is required.

Perform a Clean Boot:  http://www.thewindowsclub.com/what-is-clean-boot-state-in-windows

If that stops the problem, then re-enable things a few at a time until you figure out what's causing it.
Then uninstall the problem program (from Control Panel...Programs and Features).


My browser caused a flood of traffic, sio my IP address was banned. Hope to fix it soon. Will get back to posting as soon as Im able.
