I've noticed these messages in Console that have got me worried. I see SC Preferences being active when i'm away, and messages saying 'lock held'. Is this suspicious, or evidence of someone  / some programme accessing my security panel? Any idea why it's showing if not?

Many thanks

Thanks. So is this fairly innocuous? It just seems like another weird thing my Mac is doing of late - i just had a message saying 'another device on network is using your computer's IP address'. This is really starting to stress me out... Do you think it's related? The Mac crashed and didnt boot up first time (got stuck) I disabled wi-fi during boot-up, then it crashed again then this message... I feel like someone's targeting me and dont know what to do...

I be honest...I don't really know. It is outside of my knowledge. From that thread to which I linked, it seems like it might be related to your WiFi driver/connection on your Mac crashing.

What is giving you the message that "another device on network is using your computer's IP address"?

To be honest, that message sound more to me like you might be having an IP conflict...i.e. some other device on your network is using the same IP address as the Mac. Are you using a dynamic IP address (i.e. DHCP) on your Mac or have to assigned it a static IP address?

I would not get too stressed out. There is not a whole lot of "in the wild" malicious attack vectors out there for Macs. So, it is likely nothing to worry about, but I won't say that it is impossible. If you are really worried, then you can always fall back on wiping the computer and reinstalling everything. Personally, I don't need to go to that extreme yet, but it is always an option if you are really worried.

Thanks max, i'm really freaking out now - i just saw this in the console: It all looks shady to me (tho i am not tech guy at all) especially the "requiring rights by caller" bit i have put in bold! Any thoughts?

Choose Macintosh HD in Finder > hit the Command + I keys (Get Info) > what does it show under Sharing & Permissions?

Hi Buddy,

Sharing and Permissions:

You can only read

System - read and write

Wheel - read only

Everyone - Read only

That's all i can see in there. Does that indicate anything unusual?
