Is it possible to modify the windows kernel ?

So i wonder if its possible to modify the windows kernel somehow so is it?

 

 

 

 

(Im not asking HOW to do it because windows is closed source or to get the source code of it im just asking if its possible thats it.)

Looks like it can be (though the article below is old, and new security measures has been implemented over the years to prevent that type of attack from occuring).
