Are you able to boot a usb or dvd in order to get into BIOS?  Reason for asking:  I don't remember Windows 7 doing a "blank screen background" -- I'm wondering if the problem is higher up the food chain.

This looks like a BIOS or HDD password. After the third attempt the computer shuts down and needs to be rebooted to renter the password. What is the make and model of the computer?

we did a quick fix by replacing the HD with a cloned one that we keep around for such events.

It came right up properly, so I think this should preclude the BIOS from the issue.

will have to get make and model, not on site until next week
